CATTLE TICK FOUND

DISCOVERY AT KOHURATAHI. STOCK DEPARTMENT ACTIVE. A tick that has been identified definitely as a true cattle tick at the laboratory of the Agricultural Department at Wellington, and by the Cawthron Institute has been found on an animal in the herd of Mr. J. A. Nairn, Whitianga Road, Kohuratahi, and officers of the Live Stock Department are at present on the spot to. combat any danger of the pest spreading. Although the tick recently di?covered at Te Popo was proved to be of a harmless species, that found at Kohuratahi is not and the department has acted immediately. Equipped with the special apparatus held in New Plymouth for such an emergency, Mr. W. Harris stock inspector of Stratford, and an assistant from New Plymouth have commenced the systematic spraying of every hoof on Mr. Nairn’s farm, a task rendered the more difficult because not only the milking herd but all the cattle running upon the rougher back portions of the farm must be treated. The officers will also examine othe“ herds in the vicinity of the infected farm for ticks. In the event of their discovery, the spraying will be extended until every beast likely to be under suspicion has been treated. Mr. Harris explained that the special spray would kill any ticks on a beast, but the stock would have to be examined periodically for the presence of other ticks which might attach themselves to the animal from the ground. This is the first true cattle tick that has been found in Central Taranaki. SWIMMING IN STRATFORD. HANDICAPS DECLARED. A year ago he might have called for his grass seed in his car. A farmer from Te Wera yesterday trucked two useful sorts of dairy rows to the sale at Stratford. The cows were late calvers and were knocked down at £2 10s each. The truck from Te Wera cost about £1 and the farmer will receive £4, less commission. A bag of 147 rainbow trout ranging up to 4Jlb in weight was caught by Messrs. G. A. Carter, J. Petrie and E. C. Worthington, who fished the Awakino River for a week. All but 30 fish were returned to the stream. The weather was poor and owing to the bad condition of the bar the party was unable to go outside for a day’s sea fishing. '
