MRS. GANDHI ARRESTED

HER ‘NO TAX’ CAMPAIGNING SITUATION REMAINS CALM GOVERNMENT TRADE AIMS COERCION NOT INTENDED British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Jan. 11. News reached London this morning that following her support of the resumption of the '‘no tax’’ campaign in Bardoll Mrs. Gandhi has been arrested. News from India indicates that the situation remains generally calm and without notable incident. Sir Frederick Sykes, Governor of Bombay, addressing a conference of leading Indian and European business men to-day, emphasised that the Government did not intend to follow the example of Congress and endeavour by coercive measures to compel trade to follow in any particular channel. The ordinances were designed to protect trade from being hampered. The Government insisted on freedom for all to trade how and where they liked and would extend the fullest protection against molestation.

The Governor declared that the Indian Government adhered to the terms of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald’s statement at the close of the round-table conference and asked for the co-operation of the sober elements in the community with the Government, which was striving to prevent a bad legacy being left for the future.

Three days’ continuous rain has discouraged and dispirited the picketeers, says a Peshawar message. The hostile lashkar of the fakir of Alimgar has dispersed, having received no encouragement from the loyal Mohmed Maliks, while the conduct of the people in Khatak is now reported to be excellent.
