ESTIMATES LARGELY REDUCED. MAINTENANCE WORK OF MONTH. The monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held yesterday, the chairman, Mr. W. G. Belton, presiding. There were also present Crs. J. Lupton, R. J. Watt, R. G. Scown, W. H. Watkins, C. E. Johnston, W. Back and J. Peat. Intimation is as received from the Public- Works Departments district engineer at Stratford, Mr. P. Keller, that the cash allocation to the county in connection with current road estimates was £2680. It was stated that this amount did not include moneys for expenditure by the Public Works Department on relief of other works.

The original > aiv.arnentary grant had been in the vicinity of £5900, remarked the chairman. There was no doubt that the reduced amount available was a sign of -the times. The engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, reported as follows: Moeawatea Road in Kapara riding has been graded and all slips removed. General maintenance only has been carried out on Waitotara Valley Road and Makakaho Road. It is proposed to commence metalling on lower Valley Road at an early date. In the Moumahfcki riding maintenance work has been attended to a,nd all roads are in fair condition In the Waverley riding Mataim oana and Okatuku Roads have been graded and all roads are in good order. The first GO chains of the Waverley beach highway have been remetalied and brought up to shape in readiness for two-coat sealing. A start has been made in the Otoia East riding on re-shaping the Kaharoa highway in readiness for two-coat sealing. About half a mile of the metalled section of the highway has been rolled, shaped and dressed with stone chips. The metalling of Otautu Road is being proceeded with, about 20 chains having already been completed. In Otoia West riding the preparation for sealing of 88 chains of the Ball highway is now practically completed and it is expected to commence the bitumen work in a few weeks’ time. The chipping and rolling ot new sections of metal in the riding has been completed. A start has been made with the foundations for widening at Kakaramea and Waverley on the Main Road. Rescaling work on various sections will oe commenced at an early date. The output of the Manutahi crushing plant for the month was 1250 cubic yards, making the total crushed and carted to date 4200 cubic yards. It is expected the plant will be transferred to Waitotara at the end of the month. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Nurse Graham, of the Pa-tea Public Hospital, completed her training at the ■end of December and her place has been taken by Nunsc McLachlan. A grant of £2 10s from the Patea Hospital Board to the matron enabled her to provide each patient with a small, useful gift at Christmas time and, in her report to yesterday’s board meeting, Miss N. Kelly extended sincere thanks to the board. Appreciative reference was also made to the action of Dr. Duncan (Waverley) in adding £1 to the amount granted by the board.
