AIRMAN ON HOLIDAY

FLIGHTS IN AUSTRALIA.

SEVERAL NOTABLE RECORDS.

The holder of several flying records in Australia, Mr. H- Broadbent, of Sydney, arrived on. Monday at Auckland on a holiday visit of six weeks to New Zealand. He was accompanied by Mrs. Broadbent.

Mr. Broadbent, who is engaged in civil aviation, received his flying instruction at Mascot. He is a member of the New South Wales Aero Club and holds the distance record for the Commonwealth for a single-engine aeroplane by flying from Brisbane to Adelaide, a -distance of about 1500 miles, in 17hr lOmin. Mr. Broadbent visited four State capitals in accomplishing this performance. He made the first solo flight around Australia last year, and established a record time of 7 days S hours. The average daily distance covered on this flight, over 1000 miles, was about the same as that covered by Mr. J. A. Mollison on his flight from Australia to England. During his visit to the Dominion, Mr.; Broadbent intends to note the position of aviation in the country. At the moment, he said, civil aviation in Australia is being considerably affected by economic conditions and was scarcely a profitable activity, although it had been shown that air lines were of the greatest importance in maintaining communication.
