LIONS DISTURB RAILWAY
THRILLS FOR PASSENGERS.
(Auckland Star Correspondent.)
The latest thrill provided for passengers by the Uganda railway to Mombassa from Nairobi is the sight of lions quarrelling around the locomotive water tanks at wayside stations where the train stops to replenish supplies after a long haul through the bush country. At MacKinnon Road recently four lions were in possession of the station platform when the train arrived. They were scared off with difficulty and returned after the departure of the train to lap the water from the pools of overflow from the watering operations. The Indian stationmasters at these lonely stations beat oil tins lustily before venturing to leave their offices to deal with the trains. ■By the enterprise of ticket collectors, passengers have been awakened at the psychological moment to see lions prowlino' in the moonlight and skulking in the bush behind the tanks. Rhinos also make their appearance at times, and station staffs prefer, remaining behind locked doors at night rather than going into the open.
