WAITARA NEWS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday night, Mr. H. J. Wells presiding. There was only a small attendance. The report presented by the president stated: “So far as the chamber is concerned the past year has not been a particularly busy one. It was a matter for great gratification that the efforts of this and other bodies in the direction of securing a new post office for Waitara culminated in the erection of a handsome modern building that is a distinct credit to the town. This organisation was represented at the official opening ai.d subsequent luncheon. Although we were advised in October, 1930, that a notice would be provided to indicate when mails had been sorted into private boxes, no steps have yet been taken in this matter.

“During the ye •• the chamber expressed, its disapproval of the systems of trading coupons being introduced, and it is pleasing to note, that legislative action has been taken in this conhection. “At one time it appeared likely that a shipping service would be inaugurated between Waitara and northern ports, a shipment of butter-boxes being expected from Hokiahga. The project now seems to have unfortunately fall through.. “Active steps were taken at the time of the local body elections. A deputation arranged by this body first interviewed the ex-Mayor (Mr. E. A. George), and on his declining to stand, approached Mr. J. Hine, who consented to offer himself, and whose decision was a source of much satisfaction to the chamber. The chamber was also instrumental in providing several candidates for the Borough Council and also the Harbour Board, and believes it has every reason to be pleased with the results of its efforts. “Before concluding I would like to state that the chamber undoubtedly proves itself to be of value to the town, and fully merits all possible support.” The balance-sheet showed that an amount of £l7 10s was brought forward and that subscriptions for the year amounted to £0 13s 6d. The expenditure totalled £3 16s, of which £3 was the secretary’s honorarium. There is a credit balance of £2O 7s 6d, with no liabilities.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A discussion ensued as to the wisdom of electing oflicers with so few members present, and it was finally decided to adjourn to the fourth Monday in January. when it is hoped such interest will be evinced by townspeople as to give the chamber a good start for the new year. Mr. Wells referred to the pending de-partu-e of Mr. Garrioch, who had rendered excellent service to the chamber. He had been the right-hand man of the president, and by his services had helped the town generally. In responding, Mr. Garrioch said he would not be going far away, and would continue to take an interest and help the town as far as he possibly could.. Mr. Garrioch has been appointed .dispenser at the New Plymouth hospital, and takes up his duties there next week.
