REGISTRATION OF WIREMEN

BOROUGH COUNCIL EMPLOYERS. EXTENSION OF TIME ALLOWED. • The-New Plymouth Borough Council’s decision last J uly that, all-wiremen apd sub-station employees with three years’ service must qualify for their wiremen’s certificates within nine months would, said Cr. E. Stainton at last night’s council meeting! give the six candidates who failed only two or three night classes to prepare for the March examination; and on his motion it was decided to extend, the time until the Sep tember examination results were made known. Cr. Stainton said he and the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) had met the wiremen concerned iii connection with the unsatisfactory., results and made it clear that the council was dissatisfied. They also waited on the Technical College teachers, who pointed out to them that if the council’s resolution was adhered to the nym would have the advantage of only. two. or . three more night classes to prepare for the next examination -in-,March. It was suggested by the Mayor, Cr. Stainton said, that it be a recommendation to the council that the men be given an extension of time until the results -off the September examinations Were known, conditional upon them attending the classes satisfactorily and doing their best to qualify. Cr. 'Sta'inton added that there was an impression’abroad that the council was blaming the teachers for not providing adequate tuition. This was not so and' he and the Mayor hid made it clear to the teachers that the wiremen concerned had received the best of teaching and it was only through their own fault that they had failed. By a recommendation of the electric light committee the council decided to refund the amount of the tuition fees paid by four employees who had been certified by the principal of the Technical College to have completed 75 per cent, of attendances at evening classes for instruction for wiremen’s certificates.
