NORFOLK ROAD NEWS

SCHOOL CONCERT SUCCESS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) 'Presented in a crowded schoolroom, Norfolk School concert on Friday night was one ot the finest children’s entertainments ever presented in the schoolroom. Each item, singing, dancing, locution, humorous and orchestral, had been brought to a pitch of well-nigh perfection, and the enthusiastic and appreciative reception accorded them was a distinct tribute to the children,- and must have been very gratifying to tnose who had been responsible for their training. The teachers (Mrs. Whitaker, Misses Leech and Egarr), Mrs. McGowan, who has been conducting elocutionary and dancing lessons, at the invitation of the Women’s Institute, and Miss Evelyn Dowling, who, to give parents an idea of what a school orchestra was capable of doing, had brought an orchestra from New Plymouth, have reason to be pleased at the result. The dressing of the pupils was strikingly effective, the final touches being in the capable hands of members of the institute and Mrs. Birch Johnstone. At the conclusion of the concert Mr. Reeve (chairman of the school committee) thanked all those who had so generously assisted in making the function so successful, presented-each pupil with a book and awarded the special prizes donated by Mrs. Whitaker, Miss Leech and Mr. Trimble. The concert and prize-giving over, the Women’s Institute gave a treat for the young folk, and the arrival of Father Christmas was heralded with delight by the children. After saying a few words to them the benevolent old gentleman handed them presents from the Christmas tree which was erected in the playground and had been effectively lighted by Mr. W. Ward. During the evening a presentation from her fellow teachers and the pupils was made to Miss Egarr, who is leaving to continue her studies at the training college.
