SOUTH TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. PRELIMINARY PLAY CONCLUDED, j, . ■ Preliminary play in the South Taranaki .primary school boys’ and girls’ singles; tennis championships at the Hawera club’s courts on Saturday was concluded 'Jjus't before the weather broke. Some premising players' were seen in action and the finals between G jbsoh and Rang! in the boys’ section and J. Campbell and Irene Smith in the girls’ will be decided on the last day of the South Taranaki tournament. The officials who assisted were Miss Robertson, Messrs. Lawn, Gardner, Fittall and D. Syme, secretary. Mrs. Rudge and Miss Buist and the teachers assisted in the umpiring. Results are:—• BOYS. First Round. Tapua Manu beat J. C. Smith 9—-2, W. Dyson beat J. Fraser 9—l. Second J. MAKAKA TENNIS' COURT OPENED. The Makaka tennis court was opened recently at the school grounds. About 30 niembers have enrolled and the following committee has been formed: Messrs. Cuff (president), Dormer (secretary and treasurer), Percy Duckett (captain), J. Harkness and D. King, Misses Matty Duckett and Pearl Sangster.
