MANAIA SCHOOL CONCERT

EXCELLENT PROGRAMME GIVEN. PLAYLETS BY THE CHILDREN. . There was a large attendance on Thursday evening at the Manaia Town Hall to hear a concert presented by the pupils of the Manaia school. The programme was very creditable to the teachers, who were responsible for its arrangement and to the performers. The chairman, the Rev. R. Miller, thanked the teachers, the performers and the public and mentioned that the receipts had reached the satisfactory figure of £2l.

Besides choruses, recitations, duets, solos and dances there were several short sketches which were well acted and. much appreciated. 1 The opening chorus was given by the senior pupils. Followed rhythmic romps ■by the tiny tots and a fairy dance by the infants. Nursery rhyme dances were contributed by the tiny tots and by Standard 1 pupils. A Highland character song “Blue Bells of Scotland” was given by June Walker, Phyllis Spooner and Keith Davis.

The playette “Soot and the Fairies” was presented, the cast being: Betty Rees (Queen), Ronald Glare (Captain Soot), Ted Washer (secretary), Charlie Lawrence (Lord Bootlace), William Vincent (Baron Hairbrush), Pattie Atkinson (Lady Soapsud), Charlie Howe (Dr. Sunlight), Geraldine Chong (doctor’s secretary), Alf. Gamlin (wag). “The Wedding Farce” was another interesting playlet, those taking part being John Jennings (Parson), Norman Chisnail (Mr. Doing-well),' Jessie Clague (Mrs. Doing-well), Zelda Twidle (Lucy Doingwell), June Walker (Mary Doing-well), Reg. Silby (Mr. Price, bridegroom), Will Edwards (Mr. Hope, best man), Nora Cowling (Jane Smart, maid), Bob Crompton and Cecil Hobday.

“Thirty Minutes in the Street” was the title of a play presented by Lindsay Nicholls (stray man), David Welle (man with a bag), Eila Gundesen (rich lady), Geoffrey Hammonds (curate), Fred Andrews (actor), Geraldine Chong (French woman), Elsie Bridgwbod (child), Edythe Prestidge (first charwoman), Florence Silby (second charwoman), Norma Thomas (girl), Dulcie Gundesen (visitor), Sheila McDonald (hostess), Terence Houlahan (professor), Harold Evetts (student)-, Frances Gamlin (first shop girl), Daisy Jennings (second shop girl), Myrtle Gamlin (old.lady), Gordon Innes (old gentleman), Alan Jennings (musician), Avis Cleaver (first servant), Joyce Hansen (second servant), Eliot Dudley (young man). A mock political debate was held, Andrew Barkla being chairman. The affirmative “That Women Should'Sit in Parliament” was taken by Margaret Rees and Lila Sole and the negative by George Davies and Reg. Silby. A musical sketch “The Singaphone” was contributed by Keith Davis (Professor Carruthers) and Tom Blackstock (maclianic). The duet “Keys of Heaven” was sung by Eila Gundesen and Bruce Borrie,. a chorus “Night Time” by the senior pupils and 'a recitation “The Charge of the Light Brigade” was given by Alan George. PROFIT ON THE EGMONT SHOW.

ASSOCIATION COMPLIMENTED.

The general committee of the Egmont A. and P. Association met at Hawera on Saturday, Mr. C. H. Washer presiding over a fair attendance. The statement of accounts showed a profit of £167 19s 4d on the show. ' ‘

A letter of warm appreciation was received from Mr. 'F. Kirkwood (Stratford) who, as an exhibitor at the show, congratulated the association on the successful show. The manner in which the exhibits had been handled was all that could be desired, while the promptitude and courtesy of the stewards and attendants was such to inspire confidence in the future of the A. and P. Association’s shows.

Mr. R. McCay, on behalf of A. J. Mills and Co., in presenting the trophy to Mr. H. E. Johnson who won the butterfat competition, expressed the hope that the winner would continue to be a successful competitor at the Egmont shows. Mr; Johnson said a feature that had pleasurably impressed him had been the congratulations of other competitors. Mr. Campbell paid a tribute to the work of the ladies in connection with the provision of afternoon teas and luncheons at the grounds. A letter was reecived from the Egmont Racing Club thanking the association for its free offer of the looseboxes at the .ground for the February jubilee race meeting. It was stated that the boxes would be passed on for the use of visiting horse-owners free of charge and it was felt that this would have a favourable influence upon the attendance of horses at the meeting. POWER BOARD MEETING. The South Taranaki Power Board on Friday night agreed to a donation of £1 Is to the Hawera Fire Brigade. The engineer was instructed to cooperate with business men in Manaia and Hawera with illuminations for the holidays. A request for assistance in the lighting of the Hawera Returned Soldiers’ Club was received from a deputation consisting of Messrs. M. R. Jones, M. C. Crighton and R. McCay. The board decided to let arrears in the club lighting account accumulate until the end. of the financial year, when the position could be reviewed. It was pointed out by the deputation that owing to the economic position many honorary members had been unable to renew their subscriptions.. Board members present were Messrs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman), D. J. Hughes, J. W. Snowdon, E. Long, E. A. Washer, A. J. Gibbs, F. Parsons, N. C. Innes, E. A. Pacey and L. A. Bone. PATEA AMATEUR ATHLETICS. The weekly sports of Patea amateur athletes last week resulted: 120 yards, L. McKenna 1, R.'Gardiner 2, D. Paterson 3; 880 yards, G. Fraser 1, D. Paterson 2, J. McKenna 3. BUSINESS NOTICE. The offices of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board will be closed from 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, December 24, until 9 a.m. on January 4. , The postponed grand novelty carnival of the Hawera Swimming Club will be held at the Hawera public baths tonight. The programme will be followed by a dance.
