YORK SCHOOL BREAKING-UP

EXCELLENT HANDWORK DISPLAY. The brealking-up function of the York School thiSs year took the form of a handwork ': display. A feature of the display w.bs the utilisation of waste materials. > Cotton-reels, tins, cardboard boxes, corks, shells, scraps of linoleum, etc., were . ingeniously fashioned into various toj?s and useful Christmas presents by tiio children. The sewing and raffia work? displayed by the girls was of a high standard. A few singing items by the children formed pajit of the afternoon’s programme. The head-teacher in distributing good attendance. certificates to Tiny Potroz, Vernie Neufstrosky, Margaret Neustroski, Reg. Volzke and Ron Bridgeman, remarked iij.pon the high standard of attendance the school. Mr. F. SdShmidt on behalf of the parents compliinented Mr. and Mrs. Simpson on the display of school work, and thanked thein for the interest shown in the childrents, welfare. Spence) states:— North Riding: Further quantities of shingle have been carted from the Ackland Road piit for blinding on Mountain and Stanley. Roads. One hundred and twenty-three yards of shingle .have been taken from tibe-Midhirst depot and used in banking the bitumen edges of Mountain Road. Sixty nine yards of flne shell-rddk -from the Stanley Road pit have been distributed on the Ackland, Croydan east and 'Stanley Roads. Clay blinding has been done on Pembroke, Croydiow west and Denbigh Roads. Another dayih spraying of bitumen on Mountain Road should complete the •work between the borough boundaiy and Waipukni. The new bitumen heatting plant hits proved satisfactory, an average of MSOQ gallons per day having been handled' with one set of tanks. South Ridlngi The bitumen resurfacing of Moun.i aih Road in the riding has been completed, also one mile and quarters of ' Finnerty Road from the Ngaere end.‘ General surface work in the way of. clay blinding and •'watertabling has Ibeen done on Climio, Sole, Skinner Robson and Waihapa Roads. ’ x _ East Ridinig .(Toko): Two side tracks have been farmed and metalled on the Waiwiri Roaii.. The grader has been run over the edries of this road and over Ahuroa easj;, New and Tdko No. 2 Roads. Patching has been done and crushed shell-rock has been placed on the sides qf the bitumen on Ohura Roaxi - f j East Ridfng (Douglas): The grader has been wised in lowering the’ grass edges of Ohttira-Mangaehu,' Mangaotuku, Douglas south, Oruru, Crown and Gordon Roads. IChe eastern end of Makun Road (clay)/ has ’been graded. Turf banking has been done on the edges, of the Douglas Jiofse-shoe bends. 'Patching has been doitie on Ohura and OhuraMangaehu Roads. A set of four-feet diameter pipe s has been placed in Douglas Road sou th where the stririgers of a small bridge’, had 'become unsafe. East Riding'/(Huiroa).: The following works have.’ Been carried out. Drain cleaning andVshingle raking on Douglas Road south, hutting off bends on Akama Road, sandstg ne blinding on Kota Road, watertabling/: on Douglas Road north, turf banking-: on the new formation and the replacing of an old bridge with concrete pipes oli Mohakau Road. On Makuri Road waitertabling and clay blinding has been ;>done and one of the sharp bends cut back, the material obtained being used na building up the metal sides. Severn! loads of pungas have been carted to the Kiore Tunnel.

West Riding:.- The greater portion of the •''past mori th has been occupied in placing fihingl® from the pit on the sides of Mantiia Road, the upper, part being now cert npleted. A start will be made on the sides between Opunake Road and thia Eltham boundary, but this work will be much less extensive than that just finished. Thirty-six yards of screen rejects have been used on the side tracks on Opunake No. 1 and two yards have bean carted to Lower Hastings Road fc&.- the same purpose. Further quantities 1 of boulders have been taken from thua. pit and placed on the roadside for a rushing later in the season. Clay blinding has been done on Brooks, Brecon; Hastie, Climie, Poto, Palmer, Ronajld and Opunake No. 2 Roads.' On th e first mentioned roads metal-patching has- been done. Parts of the Manaia and Opunake No. 2 have been reblinded? where the bitumen was bleeding. i' 1 ■ Mangaehu Riding: General maintenance work in the way of raking in fine metal blinding, ’ clay banking, scrub cutting and water tabling has been done on Mangaotuku and Mangaehu Main Roads. The slips on the saddle of the former have been cleared. Fifteen yards of pit shingio have been used in building up part of Mangaehu Main Road where rain had scouued out the metal. The approach to Slangaehu stream bridge No. 1 has been improved. A drain on Taihore Road has been cleaned, the wheel ruts ha ve 'been filled. and the watertables clamed. The mouth-of the tunnel on Punfi vrhakau Road which had become blocked-, with timber has been cleared. A sUip consisting of timber, scrub and clay on Manga Road has been attended to.

Ngatimaru R iding: Overhanging scrub and silver poplars on the sides of the Matau Road so uth have been cut, on the saddle portions; of the formation have been made up with sandstone and the watertables hai - e been cleaned and wheel ruts filled. T 1 te repairs to the tunnel should be completed early in the week. The grader hm i been run over portions of Junction J ioad. On Matau Road north sandstone coating has been done and some bad li ends have been cut back. Slips on Manga) oapa and Junction Roads have been rema ved and the watertables cleaned.

The roads wore fairly clear of wandering stock, rl eported the ranger and inspector (Mr. S. J. Cuff). The only weed showing to any extent on the roadsides was Llackherry and he hoped to persuade farmers to poison it with spray with, a view to eradicating it. Nearly 1300 motor driving licenses had been issued.
