GRANT FOR UNEMPLOYED. CLAIM MADE BY ELTHAM. That no' Christmas grant was to be made 'for Eltham unemployed, was the subject of a protest to the Minister by the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Bridger, who is also chairman of the Eltham unemployment committee. After the receipt of a reply by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates regretting his inability to make a grant to Eltham owing to general distress being more prevalent in the big centres, Mr. Bridger, sent the following telegram to the Minister: "I strongly protest against the board’s action in discriminating between large and small centres regarding the unemployed Christmas grant. All centres have been previously treated alike regarding allocations for relief work. Distress and destitution are not conflnjd to the bigger centres and are not subject to geographical position. Unemployed in Eltham and district have a parallel claim with other centres. Hawera was granted £5O and Eltham nothing. The position is not equitable. Kindly reconsider the Eltham claim in the general distribution of the amount allocated, by the Government.” 1 BUSINESS NOTICE.
