WORK ON THE LAND
USE OF UNEMPLOYED. “There are only 11 men working in the Elt'ham Borough under the unemployment scheme, the others having been transferred to the county or to farms,” said the Mayor at the Eltham ‘ Borough “Council meeting on Friday, when Cr. Trask sought information on the subject. Or. Trask said there was a feeling- that the borough was “holding’’ some of the men and keeping them from going on the land. He knew, however, that such was not the case. The council had been the first to support the scheme for productive work, and he wished to clear up any doubt as to the council’s intentions.
The Mayor added that recently 10 men had been transferred to the county council and three had been directly placed on farms. This left the borough 11 men, and the county had from 35 to 40. While in hearty agreement with the placing of men in productive work, he did not favour unemployed being used under the scheme for seasonal work haymaking
