A very pleasant social was held in ths hall on Tuesday night in honour of Mrs. O. E. Wilson, who has retired from the teaching profession after 29 years’ service. There, was.a large representative gathering of residents, among them being many old pupils of the school who had travelled long distances to do honour to their old teacher. The hall was tastefully decorated in a light and dark shade of mauve streamers, which were draped from each side of the hall and joined in the centre to form a huge umbrella. The decorations were carried out by the old pupils of tho school. Messrs. Arthur Grigg and Vin Dravitzki acted as masters of ceremonies. Splendid dance music was supplied by Mrs. Martin, Misses. Dravitzki, -Hendry, Hall and Messrs. Hall, Hill, Gannoway and Kuklinski. : . During the »upper interval occasion wii taken to make a presentation-to Mrs. Wilson. Air. Gannoway, speaking on behalf of the settler*,, eulogised the service Mrs. Wilson had.rendered to the district by her capable.management of school affairs. He said it was -with a feeling of great regret that they had met together to farewell Mns. Wilson. A large/number of pupils" had passed througn her hands, and he could safely gay that they were all making good, showing the sound training they had received during their school days. Mr. Nolan, . chairman of the «chool committee, .said he wa* very sorry indeed that they were, losing such a capable and popular teacher as Mrs.- Wilson. He referred to the excellent reports- the committee had had from the inspectors who had visited the school and the splendid percentage of passes she had had during the many years »he had been m charge of the school at; Ratapiko. He would call on Mr. M. Kuklinski, an old pupil of Mrs. Wilson, to make the presentation.

Mr. Kuklineki said it was 26 years ago that ho was attending tho Ratapiko school and being taught by Mrs. Wilson. He spoke in glowing terms of the good work done by Mrs. Wilson, and flaid if the new teacher wa« just half as good the district would be fortunate. Mr. Kuklinski then handed to - Mrs. Wilson a very fine clock on. behalf of the settle!*. The clock had a silver plate with the following inscription: “Presented to Mrs. 0. E. Wilson in honour of her long and faithful service as head teacher.” Miss Mona Corlett, head pupil of the school, and little Margaret Telfer presented Mrs. Wilson with beautiful bou--quete. Airs. Martin .presided at the piano, and the large gatnering sang. “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr. 0. D. Janies responded on behalf of Mrs. Wilson and thanked the speakers for the good things they had said and also the residents for tho presentation. GENERAL. The children’* prize-giving, which was to have taken place the same evening, was postponed owing to the large number of children, who are at present suffering with whooping-cough. The school was ■ closed on Monday, a* only about one-third of the children were able to attend. Miss Vera Nolan, who was operated on for appendicitis, is in the New Plymouth hospital. Air. and Mrs. L. Mamby and Mr. and Mrs. R. Ward arrived from New Plymouth to attend the social on Tuesday night. Mrs. Mamby is a daughter of Mrs. Wilson. 1 The sad news was reecived in Ratapiko last week of the death of .Mr. Jim Telfer; Mr. Telfer was a resident of Ratapiko during the early day# of the soldier settlement on the Mana. Road and was very highly thought of in this part of the district. Sympathy, is extended to his brother, Mr. H. Telfer, Mana Road. Miss Mona Corlett, the only candidate presented at Ratapiko, was successful in securing her proficiency certicate. The local anglers have been securing good bags of trout this season. So far Mr. J. Wells tops the list with the fine record of 120 fish. 1
