THE REGENT MONKEY MATINEE TO-DAY 2 P.M. “Once a Sinner,” a Fox Movietone alltalking special, starring Dorothy Mackaill, will be the main attraction on the programme commencing at The Regent to-day at 2 and 7.45 p.m. “Once a Sinner,” based on a story by George Middleton, deals with a girl who craves luxuries, but finds a mere pittance as wages precludes her getting them. She accepts the offer of a wealthy man to provide her needs, but, not loving him, later refuses his offer of marriage. Eventually real love comes her way in the person of a young inventor, whom she marries, and then comes the question of whether or not her past life belongs to herself. Miss Mackaill enacts the role of the girl and Joel McCrea plays her husband,. The other man is portrayed by John Halliday, with C. Henry Gordon in the fourth featured role. The supports will include “The Blimp Mystery,” a clever Monkey comedy, “Island Empire” (travel, talk), Fox Movietone News, “Fly’s Bride” (Aesop Fable Cartoon), Paramount News and- “ Strange As It Seems” (Interest). ‘ EVERYBODY’S. BIG MATINEE TO-DAY 2 P.M. William Haines in “Just a Gigolo,” or “Gentlemen for Sale,” will be the feature length attraction ■of the big programme commencing at Everybody’s today at 2 and 7.45 p.m. The plot starts when Haines promises a rich uncle to marry an heiress provided he can’t mislead her in a month’s time. At the end of a month of hilarious happenings mixed with some poignant drama he gets slapped for his pains and awakens to the fact that he really loves her. The star is supported by a notable cast. Irene Purcell, the heroine, played the role for two years in the New York production, and Charlotte Granville,: also of the New York production, is seen as the mother of the girl. The choleric rich uncle is played, by C. Aubrey Smith, remembered tor his word in “The Bachelor Father.” Others in the cast include Lilian Bond, Albert Conti, Maria Alba, Ray Milland, Lenore Bushman, Gerald Fielding and Yola Davfil. A wonderful supporting programme will include “Matchplay,” a clever golf comedy starring ‘Walter Hagen and Leo Diegel, Laurel and Hardy in their latest comedy, “A Perfect Day,” “A Little Bit of Heaven” (trip through Ireland with Burton Holmes), “Thom the Unknown” (Vagabond series), “Madame Kurenko” (Chicago opera star), and Metrotone News. OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. MATINEE TO-DAY 2 P.M. “Under, the Greenwood/ Tree,” the most satisfying of all English talkies, will play its third return season in New Plymouth to-day. It will be presented at the Opera House at the matinee at 2 o'clock and at the evening session at 8 o'clock. '“Under the Greenwood Tree” was adapted from Thomas Hardy’s famous novel of the same name. It stars two young Britishers, Marguerite Allan and John Batten, in a picturesque comedy drama of old Wessex. The story concerns the Mellstock village instrumental choir, whose reign as leading musical lights in the village is threatened by the invention of the organ. A beautiful romance against rustic surroundings is supplied by the youthful leader of the band, aud the pretty schoolmistress, who volunteers to play the organ. The picture was directed by Harry Lachman. Showing in conjunction with “Under the Greenwood Tree” wil be another British production entitled “Why Sailors Leave Home.” Les-
