DEMONSTRATION FARMING

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Stratford demonstration farm committee was held on Tuesday, there being present Messrs. J. M. Smith (chairman), K. Tarrant, E. Marf’ell and W. M. Willaus. It was reported that barberry plants had been delivered and planted and the matter finalised. Mr. Marfell reported that work in connection with the erection of silos was progressing satisfactorily. It was resolved that when work on the silos was completed the men would be engaged on excavating a gravel-pit and road access to it. Mr. Marfell reported that a quantity of gum trees had been received and planted. Mr. Marfell reported that in company with Mr. Were he had inspected the pi»s. The sows were becoming old and it°was decided to keep two pigs for breeding purposes. It w as decided that cropping arrangements for the 1932 season should be three acres of swedes (inclusive of trial), an aero of mangolds, an acre o'f carrots and three acres of soft turnips. The manager's report for the period ended October 12 was: “The paddocks are looking very green although the growth is still slow. No. 16 paddock, which was cropped last year, is again ploughed and will be worked for crops when it has dried up, three acres of which the department will take over for turnip trials. Sixty-seven cows are now being milked twice daily, the milk weight for to-day is 14541 b. Ihe last test was 4-0.” Mr. Willans directed attention to the desirability of providing lick salt for cattle, and the matter was left in the hands of the chairman.
