BOVS’. STEEPLECHASES

SPECTACULAR RACING SEEN KEEN CONTEST AT WAIWAKAIHO. SENIOR RACE TO ULENBERG BROS. D. GEORGE WINS INTERMEDIATE. The New Plymouth Boys’ High School annual cross-country races, which were decided at. the Waiwakaiho golf links yesterday, attracted a large gathering of parents and friends of the school,,, who were well repaid for their trip by the spectacular racing that vtas witnessed. The day was fine though there was a keen westerly wind, but that did not deter spectators from assembling on the many vantage points. A big field of 361 boys took part in the steeplechases, the number being fewer than last year owing to the prevalence of influenza recently. That, too, had interfered with training operations and consequently the course was somev what shortened, the senior race, in which 96 competed, being reduced from about 3J miles to 3 miles, the intermediate from about 3 miles to 2i miles, and the junior race remaining as before, miles. With the exception of a short distance of the senior and intermediate races spectators had a good- view of the white-clad runners. It was a course, that thoroughly tested the lads, and the fact that practically all of them completed the course and finished full of running, no matter what their position in the race, speaks volumes for their stamina and determination. The results were: —

Senior: Steeplechase Cup for winner, also Bryce Cup for fastest time: F. Ulcnberg, 17min. 35sec. Intermediate (cup for winner): D. George; Easton Memorial Cup for fast-’ est time,-M. Radford, 15min. Isec. Junior (Noakes Cup for winner):. J. R. Arthur; fastest time, P. G-. Hawkins, lOmin. 45sec.

It was no light task to handle such large fields, but so good was the organisation that the fields were despatched like qlockwork. The numbers and times of the boys as they passed the winning post on the flat below the clubhouse were expeditiously recorded. The New Plymouth Golf Club placedt its course at the disposal of the school. Mr. F. H. Blundell also, rendered valuable assistance by removihg his sheep from the course. .. .

The officials were: Starters, Messrs. W. H. Moyes, and A. L.-Moore; marksmen, Canon E. H. Strong and Mr. A. J. Papps; time-keepers, Messrs. F. J. Eggleton and G. F. Bertrand; judges, Messrs. J. Leggat, J. W. Connell, C. G. Bottrill,' W. G. Wilkie and V. E. Kerr; championship judges, Messrs. A. G. Johnson and H- H. Skelton; result stewards,. Messrs. R. C. Wilson, E. R. McKeon, A. H. Blundell, F. Tett and J. Wright; o-round stewards, Messrs. J. D. Roulston,~R. J. Horrill, H. G. Gatland, W. I. Shrimpton, J. Dobson and _D. I. Menzies; committee, Mr. A.' W. Diprose (chairman), C- T. Cave, J. H. Birch, H. D. Law, J. West. B. R. Renton, with R. N. Cook and J. F. Wilson as secretaries. < . ,
