SCHOOL CONCERT SUCCESS. The public school concert was held in the New Theatre on AVednesday evening. The theatre was l crowded with an appreciative audience. The opening item was a selection by the school orchestra, which was well received. “Singing Games,” by the infants, in fancy costume, wae a good item. The song and dance, “Jenny Lee,”, by Violet Morrow, Winnie Baylis, Iris Cheffinge, Wilma Alurray, Annie Sorrenson and Jean McCullum, with Gladys Baylis as “Jenny Lee,” was very pretty and received an encore. Std. I. and 11. in their items, “My Garden” and “The Elf Man,” showed careful training. Another excellent item was a eong and dance, “Ukulele Dream Girl,” by Jean AlcCullum and Winnie Baylis, with Gladys Baylis, Violet Alorrow, Iris Cheffings and Joyce Pennington in the chorus.
The humorous eketch, “The Cat Family,” received a well-deserved encore. The parts were taken by Mavis Coad, Mother Cat; Victor Elgar, Father Cat; Norman Holland, Fluffy; Bill Holland, Tommy; Jack Richards, the Rat. A sea song by Std. 111. and IV. was another good item, after which Mae Ross danced a sailor’s hornpipe. AVilma Murray was the soloist in the song and dance “If Winter Comes,” the chorus being Iris Cheffings; Violet Morrow, Annie Sorrenson, Elsie Coltart, Glorie Humphries, Jean McCullum, Joyce Pennington and Winnie Baylis, with Gladys Baylis as “Spring.” Thelma and Mavis Coad made a charming picture when they sweetly sang “Silver Threads Among the Gold,” and had to respond to an encore. A Hungarian dance by Gladys Baylis wae encored. A Japanese song and dance by Winnie Baylis, Wilma Murry, Josephine Wheatley and Violet Morrow, with Iris Cheffings as soloist, was very effective. A humorous sketch by Std. VI. boys caused much amusement. A selection by the school string orchestra was the next item. Wilma Murray’s sweet voice was heard in “Sweet Hawaiian Motjier of Mine,” the chorus being Jean McCullum, Iris Cheffings, AVinnie Baylis, Annie Sorrenson, Joyce Pennington, Gladys Baylis, Elsie Coltart, Glorie Humphries and Violet Morrow. Std. AL and VI. sang “A Spanish Cavalier” and “Sam Levite’s Shop” very well. The girls of Std; V. and VI. sang “Golden Slumbers.” A banjo solo by Stanley Davey was well played. The senior girls gave a good display of drill to music. The songs by the High School pupils, “Old Virginny,” “Vive la Compani” and “Goodnight, Ladies” were well sung. Mr. Burgerson, on behalf of the school staff, thanked the public for their attendance and help. He also thanked Mcsdames Howard Smith and Colin Malcolm for the they had given in
. - - —- training the children. Mrs.. Colin Malcolm played the accompaniments. A cricket match, Married v. Single, was played'at Opunake on Wednesday afternoon. The Married side in their first ihinngs made 38 runs and the Singles 85. In the second innings the married side knocked up 84 and put the single players out in their second innings for 16 runs and won the match by 21 runs. The Rev. Roberta performed the “hat trick.”
