JUBILEE CELEBRATION PLANNED,

The monthly meeting of the Manaia School Committee was held on Wednesday. The headmaster’s report disclosed that despite the slight handicap of influenza among the pupils the attendance was 'being’ satisfactorily maintained. The primary school roll was 258 with an average attendance of 235, and the secondary roll was 48 with an average 0f’43,6. A specimen copy of the Manaia School annual magazine and. prospectus which the high school staff and pupils compiled was shown to the committee. It contained an interesting summary of examination results, sports items and a number of contributions from the staff and scholars. A movement has been initiated, by the staff to make July 31, the date of the Manaia School’s jubilee, an occasion of special notice in the school’s history. Mr. Sherson has taken the secretaryship and it is proposed' to hold a public meeting at a later date ; to put matters into concrete form. In connection with the movement it is hoped to have a souvenir publication embracing all the interesting items which can 'be collected in connection with the early history of the school], its teachers and pupils. The various outdoor sports among the pupils are being well provided for and the interest between the ten (schools comprising the Manaia Centre is becoming keen, and competitions for the trophies presented, by the Herbert Smith trust for the various sports branches should, have a large number of entrants. JUBILEE NIGHT FRACAS. FINES FOLLOW FISTICUFFS. Following a brawl after the jubilee dinner on Tuesday, when the jawbone of one man was fractured, charges of assault and being drunk and disorderly were laid against a young man from a vessel in port, his name being suppressed. A fine of £2 10s on the latter charge was inflicted, he being convicted and discharged on the charge of assault. A youth was also charged with using •obscene language and was fined £2. Suppression of the name was also granted in this case. PERSONAL. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. E. Wills was expressed at the annual meeting of the Hawera Methodist Church on Wednesday night. Several speakers eulogised the services of 'Mr. Wills, particularly as a local preacher for many years. The Rev. E. S. Emmi’t. has been unanimously invited to .continue his ministry at the Hawera Methodist Church for n further term. Mr. Emmitt has accepted the invitation. Mr. James Smith, formerly of Waihi Road, Hawera, has died after being an invalid for several years. Mr. Smith was an early. settler in the Stratford district—he settled on Beaconsfield Road 45 years ago.
