NEARLY HALF WORLD’S TOTAL.

Bee. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Oct, 14. The quarterly returns of shipbuilding compiled by Lloyd’s Register show that at the end of September' there was over 417,0(50 tops gross under construction in Britain and Ireland. ' The next leading countries were the United States, 261,000 tons; France, 170,000; Italy, 159,000. The Register points out that notwithstanding the great reduction in the amount of work in hand the'tonnage actually in course of construction throughout the world on September 30 was 894,598 ' tons. Of this total 383,092 tons was being built in Britain and Ireland.
