FITZROY HOLY TRINITY FAIR

OUTSTANDING SUCCESS ACHIEVED OPENING BY ARCHDEACON EVANS. With numerous stalls stocked to repletion,- evidence of the enthusiastic work of the members of the ladies guild and of the mothers’ union, the spring fair under the auspices of the Holy Trinity Church was opened in the Parish Hall, Te Heuui, New Plymouth, yesterday afternoon. It is the opinion of many that the support accorded is in advance of previous years. The hall presented a busy scene in the morning as the generous contributions for the stalls were being brought in, but long before the time get for the opening everything was arranged. The official opening was performed by Archdeacon and Mrs. Evajis, the latter being presented with a bouquet by little Peggy Weller. The vicar, the Rev. W. C. S. Stephens; remarked that it was- with considerable pleasure' and pride that he welcomed Archdeacon and Mrs. Evans, pleasure because there were nd twp people more highly esteemed and loved in Taranaki, and pride because he could honestly say that the fair marked a considerable advance bn those of previous years. The organisers had received gifts in kind and in labour from people who had not previously assisted. Mr. Stephens especially commented on the assistance received from residents of Tarurutangi and Smart Road. He added that the erection of a church at Tarurutangi had not been forgotten. . Archdeacon and Mrs. Evans, on rising to open the fair, were accorded musical honours. Mr. Evans said that during the 35 - years he had been in New he had taken a great interest in Fitzroy, the progress of which had been very satisfactory. He considered Fitzroy was likely to be a large parish as with such generous supporters it must continue to progress. It was splendid to be able to . make the best of things, Mr. Evans said. It was no use going about with long faces when they should be smiling. Englishmen always rose above bad timefe; it was the fact that they had had to overcome bad times that nad. made them what they were as a nation. . : The fair wae a great credit to the guild which had worked unitedly to make it a success, and in this igonnection Mr. Evans paid a . tribute to the work of the secretary (Mrs. A. Q. Greatbatch). ' Once the fair was opened all tne stalls appeared to go great business. Those in charge were: Plain stall, Mesdaifies Akers, Fairhall and Greatbatch; fancy, Mesdames L. Chivers,' Pearce, Ingram, Giddy and Simpson; produce, Mesdames Waterston, Webster, Lea, Kyngdon, Warnock, Taylor, Colson and Rollo, Misses Pavitt and Puljeri; mothers’ union stall, Mesflaqies Huggard, Johnson, Styles,Low and Weller; sweets, Misses Woods, R. Macdonald, a' musical monologue by Miss Joan Rennell, a playette (“The Mad Tea Party”) by Misses Gleeson, Ilin Morton and Childerstone, a song by Miss Jessie Home! a song by Miss Betty Turnbull, and a recitation by Miss Jemison.
