CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF

SENIOR EVENT CONCLUDED. GREEN’S DEFEAT OF CURTIS. Displaying remarkably accurate putting which was instrumental in winning him the match, W. I’, P. Green beat L. Qurtis 9 up and 8 over 36 holes in the senior championship of the Stratford Golf Club. The game was played during the week-end. In the morning the two finalists played 18 holes practically unattended, but the afternoon saw a large crowd in attendance. Green was 4 up at the eighteenth but Curtis hung on to him well during the first part of the afternoon, though Green’s deadly putting gave him a big advijitage and his play being steady throughout the game he was able to draw away and establish the lead which gave him the championship. The semi-finals had resulted in Green’s beating K. N. Neal and Curtis’ defeating R. B. Anderson. Following are the results of the third round of the junior championship, which leave only eight players to contest the remainder of the competition:— McHattie beat Hamilton. Strachan beat Pegg. Seyb beat Wynyard. Kivell beat Lewis, O’Leary beat H. Slater. Kirkwood beat Harris. Budge beat Irving. Sullivan beat Penn. SELF-HELP GARDENS, FIFTY MEN INTERESTED, Fifty people have drawn supplies of seeds and manures from the organisers of the Stratford Self Help Club, and men engaged upon unemployed relief works are taking up the garden scheme wi(h enthusiasm. Most of the families are cultivating ground in the immediate vicinity of their houses, but ten or twelve are working on vacant sections lent for this purpose by citizens. In all cases the methods of gardening have been sound and it is certain that some of the best vegetables this year will be produced as a result of the efforts of the club. ' Dr. Doris Gordon, one of the originators of the club, explained that in January it was estimated that about 250,000 young broccoli, cabbage and leek plants would be required for planting. Seed sufficient to produce that quantity had been issued to the more experienced gardeners to develop seedlings. “The funds in hand are just about sufficient to see the club through,” she said. Commenting upon the interest- the scheme had aroused among the unemployed, Dr. Doris mentioned a number of cases where the provision of a vegetable garden had wrought a transformation in the surroundings of the homes. One genuine worker who had occasion to move to another habitation was strenuously busy turning the sod before even the furniture had been properly settled in place. Instances were also given of the wives and families of unemployed men making excellent use of their spare time in the gardens. ELTHAM JUNIOR GOLF. JEFCOATE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. Playing a very fine game, R. Jefcoate defeated J. Wanklyn 5 up and 4 and won the junior championship of the Eltham Golf Club during the week-end. Both players were in good form and both did the first round under 80, bogey being 72. Jefcoate finished 3 up at the end of the first round. The players halved six holes in bogey in succession, Wanklyn taking one over bogey at the seventh. Jefcoate had the misfortune to be stymied twice on the seventh green, halving one and losing the other.
