BRIGHT CONCLUDING DAY

GIBRALTAR PERFORMS WELL TANKARD GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD. SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland spring meeting concluded to-day in tine weather. Gibraltar recorded a smart performance in beating a strong field of hacks in fast time. Racing throughout the day was extremely interesting. Tankard repeated his Avondale form and outclassed the other two-year-olds. . ' Always in a good position Gibraltar came through in the straight in the Normanby Handicap and won like a good horse. Full Measure was left and Tambourine lost her rider at the end of half a furlong. Peter. Jackson and Gibraltar hopped off ahead". of Te Money, Pomp and Emancipation,' but down the back and across the top the last named joined Peter Jackson, with Catoma, Gibraltar and Dominican following. Peter Jackson and Emancipation were together ahead of Pomp and Gibral-J tar into the straight, where Te Money showing up on the outside. Gibraltar was first to challenge Peter Jackson, and he won with his ears pricked by threequarters of alength. Te Money was two 'lengths ■ back, just ahead of Pomp, Emancipation, Air Laddie, Dominican, Catoma ' and, Catchem. NASSOCK OUTSTAYS FIELD. Nassock won the Manakau Hurdles simply because he outstayed the field. Cargen, Claremore and Moerangi made the early running, Page Boy falling at the hurdle at the bottom of the straight. Nassock joined the leaders out of the straight. and Moerangi fell at the seven furlongs post. Half a mile from home Nassock had gone out in the lead, and though Landmark made a great effort over the last bit he failed by five lengths to get up to Nassock. •Gargen was three lengths back and Claremore, High Pitch and Slump were next. Landmark was left too far back. CONSENT NEVER HEADED. As on the first day Consent drew first position, began a length in front of the field and was never headed in the Epsom Handicap, .running record time for Ellers* lie in the spring. Following Consent out from the barrier were Refresher, Arisus and Lady-Quex, but across the top Tea Chat was next to the favourite, with Orapai, Arisus, Refresher, King Ford, Lady Quex and Karapoti in the next division. The field suffered no change into the straight, where Orapai momentarily threatened danger but quickly died out, and Consent went on to win under pressure by threequarters of a length from Tea Chat, Arisus being a length and a half back, with Refresher fourth. ' Close up were Lady Quex, Orapai, Impetuous, Karapoti and Chromadyne. Lady Quex did not seem to go kindly for Bagby, while Orapai-was a trifle tender in front in the preliminary. Tea Chat is coming back to form. LADY PAM WINS NARROWLY. The support accorded Lady Pam in the King Edward Memorial was fully justified, for she was always in a good position and won well. Standfast began best and led out of the straight and to the six furlongs from' Taurua, Lady Pam, Prince Vai and Little Doubt. Across the top and into the straight Standfast, Taurua and Lady Pam were in line, but the favourite was first to straighten up. Taneriri made a fine run in the straight but failed by a head to get up. Prince Vai was a neck further back, and Historic, Little Doubt, Cessation and Standfast were almost in line. It was one of the closest races of “the meeting. The sectional times were 27 2-5, 40, 53, 1.5 3-5, 1.18, 1.29 4-5 and 2.7. KING’S COUNSEL COMFORTABLY. Domestic Trouble and Kamehameha attended to the pace-making for a couple of rounds in the Onehunga Steeplechase until Domestic Trouble fell and broke her back six furlongs from home. King’s Counsel and Billy Boy followed Kamehameha up the hill and the trio were in line going down the slope. King’s Counsel led over the last obstacle and went on to win comfortably by six lengths from Billy’s Boy, with Kamehameha four lengths back. Scaramouche and Town Beauty were tailed off. TANKARD’S BRILLIANT WIN. The best youngster seen this season is undoubtedly the Tea Tray colt Tankard, who completely outclassed the Musket Stakes field. Glowlight, Splutter, Midinette and Tankard were first to move, but Gray had Tankard on the rails alongside Splutter, Glowlight, La Moderne and Midinette into the straight. Once headed for home Tankard left the field standing and won pulling up by three lengths from La Moderne, whose good finishing effort carried her into second place threequarters of a length ahead of Splutter. Timorous was close up fourth, with Inflation, Rulanut, Te Waipu, Merry Way, Loombination and Glowlight next. La Moderne, a sister to Gay Ballerina, lost her rider the first day. Timorous drew the rails but was again slow to find her feet. UNITED ATTRACTIVE. The Acre-Lucena colt United, who showed some pace last season as a two-year-old, lost his maiden status in the Hobson Handicap, which he won attractively, and he should now go on winning, since he has struck form. Ganpat and Karangapai moved off from Hollyholm and. Marehette but at. the turn United had run up to fourth. Karangapai turned into the straight from Ganpat, United, Hollyholm and Heremia, but the pacemaker tired quickly and United was in 'front at the distance, going on to win by a good length from Ganpat, with Hollyholm a head further back. Then came Karangapai, Ileremia, Curie, Actaeon and Valueless.

: DEAD-HEAT AT FINISH. A great race in the Liverpool Handicap concluded the programme,- the judge being ■unable to separate Puriri Park and Sir Mond, while Gay Lap was practically in line with them. Eaglet was 'actually first to move but down the back Sir Mond was showing the way to Clopton, Gay Lap, Puriri Park, Flying Prince, Crunch an and Eaglet. Sir Mond was still in front when the straight was reached, Clopton, Puriri Park, Flying Prince, Gay Lap, Cruachan and Richfield being his nearest attendants. In a great finish Gray’s riding alone kept Sir Mond on terms with Puriri Park, while Gay Lap was a short neck. back. Then came Autumn Sun and Prince of Orange, who finished fast, Cruachan, Esglet, Pewa, White Wings and Richfield. WELLINGTON RACE MEETING. SPRING NOMINATIONS.
