RELIEF WORK IN BOROUGH

ORDER OF CONCENTRATION. RESOLUTIONS BY THE COUNCIL. For the balance of the financial year the New Plymouth borough engineer has been instructed as far as possible to concentrate all relief labour (1) on the stock route, (2) Frankley Road, and (3) To Mete (Smith’s) Park. The Borough Council to this decision last night in accordance with the following report submitted by Mr. Clarke:— Stock Route: The section from Waimea Street to Frankley Road is in an uncompleted state and now that the summer months are approaching could be completed. Up to 40 men could be employed on this work for approximately three months and an approximate expenditure of £4OO will be required on haulage. Regarding the section from Frankley Road to Govett Avenue, parts of this length are now available, but the survey is being held up pending settlement with two owners, Mr. Wood and Mrs. Julian, who have not yet consented to the dedication of the necessary areas of their land. ‘‘Frankley Road: Work is in progress on the cutting back of the batter on the corner opposite Mr. Weston’s property and I had in mind continuing this work until completed. Haulage will probably cost £lOO and any number of men up to 50 could be employed. “Smith’s Park; This work is in an uncompleted state and would afford work for approximately 20 men for a period, without expenditure on haulage. To complete the work haulage would, however, be required on parts of the filling.” It was decided that in order to minimise as far as possible the carrying out of uon-permanent works, the number of men to be engaged on unemployment relief works in parks, the cemetery and other reserves should be personally fixed each week by the borough engineer. It was agreed as a special resolution under section 155 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1925, that the works enumerated be relief works to be carried out under the Unemployment Board’s scheme.
