COURT SESSION AT STRATFORD. UNLICENSED RADIO SETS. Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., gave judgment by default to plaintiffs in the following undefended civil cases heard at Stratford yesterday: Taranaki Chain Stores v. P. Sanson for £2 8s 3d (costs £1 8s 6d); Public Works Department v. L. E. Knight, £l6 5s ( £2 19s). For being in possession of an unlicensed radio set G. Jones (Wharehuia) was fined 10s (12s). On behalf of defendant Mr. A. Coleman said the offence occurred through misapprehension, defendant having had a set on trial and not having registered it pending his decision regarding purchase. K. V. Anderson (Wharehuia) was similarly fined on a like charge. William James Newman, £145 in arrears in the payment of maintenance to his wife, Grace Newman, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. Newman d-d not appear. “This man has always said that he would rather go to gaol than pay; he has already served two sentences,” said the clerk of the court, Mr. J. W. Pooley. “He will have to serve another now,” remarked Mr. Tate. 1 MIDHIRST NOTES. A very pleasant evening was spent at the hon e of Mr. and Mrs. P. Harkness for Miss Gladys Byron, on the eve of her approaching marriage to Mr. H. Whittington. The evening was spent in games and competitions, the first competition being won by Mrs. P. Jones and Mr. H. Whittington, and the second by Miss Gladys Byron and Mr. P. Harkness senr. During the evening Miss Byron received many beautiful glass dishes. Mr. Whittington extended thanks on behalf of Mies Byron for the many kindnesses and the beautiful presents. At midnight the evening eoncludea with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Mr. Whittington thanked Mr. and Mrs. Harkness for the very pleasant evening. Amoncr the guests were Miss G. Byron, Mn H. Whittington, Mrs. G. P. Harkness (New Plymouth), Mr. and Mrs. Byron, Mr. and Mrs. Gernhoefer (Toko), Mr. Mark Whittington, Mr. J. Weathered (Napier), Miss Yardell (Auckland). Misses Doris, Eileen and Isabel Byron, Mr. McLaughlan, Mr. and Mrs. Platt, Mr. and Mrs. P. Jones, Miss Hamblyn, Mr, anu Mrs. J. Gibbs. Miss Yardell (Auckland) is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Platt. Mr. and Mrs. J. Gibbs are the guests of Mrs. R. Sarten, New Plymouth, for the week-end. Mr. P. Harkness it visiting New Plymouth, The Methodist Ladies’ Guild met recently at the home of Mrs. Buxton, where a very busy time was spent arranging a gift afternoon in aid of the bazaar. STRATFORD MOUNTAIN CLUB. The third annual meeting of the Stratford Mountain Club at the residence of the president, Dr. W. P. P. Gordon, last night was attended by over 40 members. Dr. Gordon presided. The report and balance sheet (already published) were adopted, after the chairman had congratulated members on coming through the season so well, especially from the financial point of view. The following officers were elected: — President, Dr. W. P. P. Gordon; vicepresident, Mr. V. Kay; club captain, Mr. J. Carryer; vice-captain, Mr. A. W. White; chief guide, Mr. A. Haldane; honorary secretary, Mr. A. E. Foster; publicity officer, Mr. W. Ewing; committee, Misses J. Beale, K. Kempthorne and Carryer, Messrs. J. L. 0. Lowe, E. J. Triggs, j. C. Robins, W. Pettigrew senr., B. Millan, and H. Murray; honorary auditor, Mr. G. A. Carter; honorary surgeon, Dr. Doris Gordon. A number of new members were elected. The committee was instructed to discuss with the last committee the matter of hiring out skis. A special general meeting will be held shortly to consider a notice of motion given by Mr. White to alter the rules to provide for six ladies on the committee. The committee was recommended to go into the matter of transferring the club’s account to the post office savings bank. Subsequently Mr. White delivered an interesting lantern lecture on Western Otago. . Members were then entertained to supper. i-
