ENGINEER’S MONTHLY REPORT. PROGRESS OF GOVERNMENT LINE. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Power Board was eld yesterday, there being present Messrs H. G. Carman (chairman), N. H. Moss, H. J. Marchant, M. J. Gernhoefer, C. E. McGuinness, R. J. Knuekey, J. Dobson and C. Foreman. The engineer (Mr. B. H. Goldsmith) reported: —The number of consumers as at August 31, 1931, was 2129. Units generated during the month totalled 900,400. The largest daily output was 30,800 units on August 29, and the maximum demand of 1656 k.w. occurred on August 8 and again on August 24. New Plymouth drew supply on one day only during th- month, the Government line being taken out of commission to enable telephone cross-arms to be fitted. Installations connected during the month were as follows, figures for the corresponding period last year being given in brackets; —Milking motors 12 (23), other motors 7 (10), stoves 1 (0), water heaters 7 (27), pumps 0 (6), lighting and heating (new) 6 (17), lighting and heating (add.) 14 (24). Work on the Mangaotea cut has proceeded steadily, 23 days being spent in sluicing. Eleven hours were occupied in cleaning grid and splitting posts and blocks. Alterations to the board’s main 33 k.v. line, rendered necessary by the erection of the Government line, have been carried out. The erection of two additional poles was required in order to lower the board’s wires at the point where the Government line will cross. During the carrying out of this work it was necessary to interrupt the supply to Rawhitiroa and Mangamingi, some inconvenience being caused. The nature of the work was such, however, that it was impossible to divide it into two portions to be done on separate days. A BRIEF MEETING. BOARD MEMBER CAUGHT NAPPING The general business of the Taranaki Power Board was put through in record time yesterday, and within 15 minutes of opening the meeting was in committee. Mr. N. H. Moss, who was busily studying some papers, proceeded to speak when the chairman reminded him that, the board had already gone into committee. Mr. Knuekey: I didn’t think we could get a resolution passed without Mr. Moss knowing. (Laughter.) Mr. Moss: I was busy studying other matters. PERSONAL ITEMS. As the nomination of Mr. J. McAllister as parents’ representative on the board of managers of the Stratford Technical High School was the only one received he has been declared re-elected by the returning officer, Mr. A. H. R. Amess. Mr. William Rainsford Penn died at Auckland on Thursday at the age of 73 years. Mr. Penn, who was managing director of Alfred Buckland and Sons Ltd., was the third son of the late Mr. Thomas Penn, Stratford. In his youth he entered the civil engineering profession and was for some time engaged .in ordnance survey work in 'Worcestershire. He came to New Zealand about the end of 1881 and a few years later joined the firm of Alfred Buckland and Sons at Auckland, eventually succeeding Mr. H. J. Gorrie on the latter’s death a few years ago as managing director of the company. He leaves a widow and a step-family, but had no family of his own. The Rev. W. W. Avery, of Auckland, is making a visit to Wanganui and Taranaki. He will be present at the Eltham flower show next week. That the Stratford County Council may be able -to use unemployed, men in eliminating the danger of the sharp rise where Croydon Road joins Mountain Road is a suggestion that will be made to the council following discussion at the meeting last night of the executive of the Stratford branch of the South Taranaki Automobile Association. The annual meeting of the Stratford branch of the Girl Guides’ Association will be held in the Borough Council Chambers at 2.30 p.m. to-day.
