STRATFORD PUBLIC SCHOOL

DENTAL CLINIC MANAGEMENT.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Stratford school committee was held last night, Mr. A. E. Moss '■presiding. The headmaster (Mr. L. J. Furrie) reported that for the. term the average attendance had been 521, which was the minimum number for Grade 78. Miss F. Ritchie had received an appointment at the Central school (New Plymouth), and Mr. D. Taylor an appointment at Onehunga. Applications for the positions thus vacated had been called, but it would probably'be November before permanent appointments were made. In the meantime, the work would have, to be done with relieving teachers. The ssnioi' boys had completed the planting of hedge plants from the school nursery along the Ariel Street boundary. Resignations were received by the committee from the two teachers, who were thanked for the assistance they had given to school functions at various times.

The dental nurse (Miss E. M. McKenzie) reported that the total roll at the clinic had been reduced to 104. Of those, 75 had received treatment and would require no more attention for six months. The remaining 29 would receive attention by September 12 or 15. When the financial patients had been completed the nurse would, at the committee’s wish, continue with those who were due for treatment but who had not paid the fee. The total operations for the month had been 350. The chairman said it was desired to give parents a last opportunity to pay before refusing treatment to any child. Once a child left the primers,-he said, without payment having been made the child was not eligible as a patient of the clinic. The amount received to date had been £22 15s.

The matter was referred to the clinic committee, which, aftei - making allowances for those who could not pay, would issue accounts rendered as a last reminder to parents. An application from the Radnor committee to have children of that school treated at the clinic was referred to the inspector of clinics with a recommendation that the request be granted. The chairman said the receipts at the minstrel performance in aid of the committee and the band had been £ll 10s. GENERAL ITEMS, That the activities of the Stratford Self Help Club are attracting attention outside the province is indicated by the receipt of letters from Palmerston North and Whakatane asking for details of the scheme with the object of starting a similar movement in those towns. The Stratford committee will be pleased to hear from residents having land available for gardening plots.
