NORTH EGMONT COMMITTEE

BASTGEB’S BEPOBT ON WORK. A'meeting of the North'Committee of the Egmont National Park Board was held at tNew Plymouth on Monday, when there were present Messrs; W. I>. Armitt (acting-charman), H. V. S. Griffiths, W. H. Skinner, S. Vickers, J. Gibson, F. Amoore and L. W. Lovell (secretary).

« The ranger (Mr. R. W. Larsen) reported that since the last meeting of the board, the “old house” had been painted inside, all the bunks had been renovated and new netting put on. Curtains and blinds had been put up at all the windows and a new set of lockers erected to replace the old crockery cupboard. A culvert had been put in to take the storm water from the “old house” as suggested by Mr. Connett, and the hand pump had been fixed, so that in frosty weather the water could be pumped into the tanks. Two new signs had been erected in prominent positions warning climbers of mountaineering dangers. Where necessary holes in the tar-seal-ed portion of the road had been patched and corners banked. Next week if the weather continued fine he would patch, the edges of the road where necessary. The tar-sealed portion of the road was getting very bare in places and would take a fair amount of maintaining in future. He thought that was due to the tremendous amount of snow that had fallen this year and that chains had had to be used on cars and the board’s truck. He had had to cut a track through the snow several timed so tliat cars could get up to the houses. On the bottom portion of’the road gravel had been carted and spread, and he hoped to be able to continue with the work, as a fair amount of gravel was needed to blind that stretch of road. He had put in a culvert at the site' of the old gate to take the storm water that used to rush down to the hostel and a new culvert had also been put in at the hostel. Consideration of the question of resealing the road was deferred till the next meeting. The Alpine Club was accorded a vote of thankd for assistance in providing curtains at the old house.
