FAREWELL PRESENTATION. . To show the esteem in which they were held by the residents, a social afternoon was held at the school on Friday to make a presentation to Mr, W. Savage and family on. their leaving the district. 'The afternoon took the form of a concert by the school children/ assisted- by local artists. Some very pretty Morris dancing was done on * the lawns by the children, after which the concert programme was presented: Song, infants, “Under the Old Apple Tree”; song, seniors, “See. Our Oars with Feathered Spray”; song, Miss I. Poi, “Mean to Me”; song, Miss F. Elm.es; song, infants, “White Sails”; recitation, Miss G. Elmes, “Life’s Purpose”; songs, seniors, “Anvil Chorus” and “Stars that Gem.” Mr. J. Kerrisk, jun., as chairman, said that Mr. Savage had been in the district for 17 or 18 years, and it was very hard to say farewell to such an old resident. Mr. J. O’Shea, in making the presentations, said that he had been a neighbour of Mr. Savage since the latter had come to the district’. Mr. Savage always took a great interest in all public functions. During the whole of his residence in the district he was a. director of the Mere Mere Dairy Company. He was also one of the prime movers in having the Ohangai Hall built. His principal activities, however, had been in connection with the school, and both past and present pupils owed Mr. Savage a deep debt of gratitude for the great deal of time he had devoted to their interests. Mr. G. Wallace, on behalf of the Mere Mere residents, said that he had known Mr. Savage for the past 18 years, and was very sorry to lose him from the district.

Mr. O’Shea presented Mr. Savage with a set of pipes and a, tobacco pouch. Mis? G. Savage received a handbag and a hair brush, comb and mirror, and. Mr. S. Savage received a fountain pen. Mr. Savage was greeted with applause. He- said he wished to thank all for the kindness shown to himself and his family during their residence in the district. It was hard to say farewell to all his old friends, but he intimated that lr& would return occasionally to renew acquaintance. The dispensing of afternoon, tea brought a very pleasant afternoon to an end.

. A euchre party and da.noe in aid of hall 'funds was held ia the Ohangai hall

on Friday night. Fifteen . games of euchre were played, the winners ’ being Miss M. Dyson, 13 games, and Mr. Hinga, 12 games. The consolation prizes went to Miss T. Goord, three games, and Mr. L. Radford, three games, after a cut with Messrs. O’Shea and C. Patchell. Following supper dancing was commenced to music by Mrs. Trott, Misses T. and M. Dyson, Messrs. T. Urn and S. Kerrisk.

The factory has commenced operations in earnest, most of the farmers having at least half of their cows in. A most unusual event recently was the birth of three calves, triplets, ia one of the herds.

HOCKEY AT HAWERA.

BENNETT AND SUTTON CUP.

To-day at Hawera, a seven-a-side hockey contest for the Bennett and Sutton Cup will be held, In view of this contest the proposal to hold trials at Eltham to-day to select a junior representative team to play Wanganui has been abandoned.

The teams for to-day are; — Alhambra: Ryan, Carter, Crulekshanks, Simon, Dowdle, Watson, Shaw. Oriental: Thompson, R. Clarke, Duncan, Brough, Percy, Moloney, Windle.

Great dissatisfaction with the committee of the New Zealand Alliance in suggesting the postponement of the licensing poll this year was expressed at yesterday’s meeting of tho Hawera branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Members pointed out that temperance workers had not even ■been advised, that tile proposal was to be made, let alone consulted about it.

A motor-car driven by Mr. J. Baldwin, Mokoia, came into collision with a lorry in the straight on the main road beyond th& Kakaramea factory yesterday. Tho car was extensively; damaged, but no one was Injured. ■ To raise funds’ to Send a team to

Wellington to contest the Dr. Collins Cup competition in November, a scries of social evenings is being held by the Hawera branch, of the Red Cross Society. A very successful evening was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Jones on Monday, resulting in over £4 being added to tho fund. An enjoyable time was spent by about ,60 members and. friends in community singing, cards, games and dancing. Several vocal eolos were sung.
