CHRISTCHURCH PROSECUTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Aug. 24. David George McGifford, aged 23, single, charged with assaulting Sergeant Hyland and with lawlessness and disorderly behaviour during a Communist procession on August 1, was sentenced by Mr. Mosley, S.M., to one month’s hard labour on the first two charges and fined £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. The magistrate said the man was not level-headed, but must be taught a lesson.
