VISITING THE PUBLIC HOSPITAL.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Why is it that so many institutione which depend for their support upon public funds and contributions yet go far towards treating the public churlishly? To-day, having travelled from Hawera, I found myself with a little time to spare at 1.30 p.m. and a. near relative in the public hospital. “Might ;i see him for a few minutes- if I were to. come up?” I inquired of the officer who answered the phone. “Just a minute and I’ll ask the doctor,” came the answer. In a few moments came the '.further answer, “I am sorry,, ibut the (doctor says that they will be busy this aftefnooh.” “But I’ll come now and just walk in, cheer him up, and come out again.” But my plea was of no avail. “I am sorry, but I can’t help it.” J And there it is. I suppose that some rule has to be instituted, but surely some discretion in favour of visitors from. out- j side the town might be given to the j nurses. This is the second occasion on which I have been denied admission when I have had. only a limited time at my disposal.—l am, etc.,
