ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

DUFF BOWL COMPETITION FOUR N. PLYMOUTH TEAMS PLAY. ALBIONS TOO GOOD FOR PIRATES. Matches between the four senior association football teams iu New Plymouth for the Duff rose bowl took place on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. The results were: Albion 5 v. Pirates 1. Caledonians 4 v. Moturoa 2. As the competition is Icing conducted on the '"knock-oita” prinriplc, Albion and Caledonians will meet one another in the final on September 5. Superior combination ai d more experienced players won the game for Albion at Western Park with a score of 5 to •1 against Pirates. Nevertheless it was by no means a dull match to watch and Pirates played well against a better team.

The teams were: Albion: Neighbour; Ashton, Howie; Berry, Parkinson, Ibbotson; Bannister, Mecredy, Walbran, Smith, Upshal). Pirates: Renton; Harwell, Anderson; Herdson, Chapman, Wilmshurst; McKeehnie, Wingrove, Jones, Henry, Hamilton. i .

Pirates kicked off, but Bannister dribbled back along the line till he reached Anderson, who cleared. At the other end McKechnie was baulked by Howie, but Pirates returned to the attack and the defence was tested, Howie clearing with a header. Bannister again came to light and lobbed into Renton s arms. Later Bannister passed in but \Valbran missed connection in a good position. Mecredy saved the situation, however, by running up to fill the breach and shoot Albion’s first goal. Pirates began a series of attempts, initiated by Chapman, to feed their forwards, but Parkinson was a solid stopper and consistently returned the ball to the other side of half-way. Bannister centred several times, but Walbran was inclined to miss connection. However, he did eventually take a pass from the inside and fired a good one into Renton’s hands. Ashton carried downfield and centred, Walbran coming in to swing Renton a sturdy shot that was cleared on the goalie’s toe. Herdson received and passed up to Wingrove and McKechnie, who put the defence on their mettle. For a brief period Neighbour, Ashton and Howie were kept busy, but the game eventually moved to the other end, where Renton was tested with a good high shot. A series of attacking movements following centring kicks by Bannister kept Pirates on the defensive. The goalie was several times called upon to save. Anderson, Harwell and Chapman were conspicuous on defence, but they could not prevent a passing movement among the forwards and half-backs ending in a well-shrit goal by Walbran. Anderson passed over to Herdson, who fed McKechnic; th© outside-left tried hard to lodge a goal but Ibbotson was just too much for him. There was a pretty movement when Smith, finding himself baulked, sent right across the field to Bannister, who immediately tested Renton; the goalie threw out, but before liis backs could clear Parkinson arrived to send a ground kick into the copier of the net, making Albion three up. Bannister finalised a tussle with Wilmshurst by centring; Walbran received on his head and deflected the ball toivarde the goal, Renton saving well by tipping over the bar. The corner kick by Bannister was resultless. Albion seemed to have the measure of their opponents. From another attack Smith scored the fourth goal. Then Herdson started his forwards away and McKechnie, Wingrove, Jones and Co. got within striking distance and Howie and Ashton had their hands full until Parkinson came back to clear from McKechnie.

The second spell commenced with Jones trying to carry play up to Albion’s quarters, but very soon Pirates were on the defensive again. Berry, who had been playing his usual vigorous game, ran up and centred to Walbran, whose header graced the outside of the upright. Later Renton threw out a good kick from Walbran. Walbran came across to receive a short pass from Bannister; and the way to the net being crowded he sent a long kick to Ibbotson, who lobbed, over the player’s heads' into Renton’s hands. Chapman cleared to Henry and Hamilton and these two, helped by Wingrove, made a lightning dash down a practically clear field only tp be finely stopped by Ashton, who sped half-way across the grotind to take the ball oil Hamilton’s toes. At the other end Bannister received to register the fifth goal. After stopping several shots Renton was saved the necessity».of clearing a long, hard shot from Parkinson; the ball hit the under edge of the crossbar in the middle and bounced down hard ou the ground and away—almost a goal. Renton was being given plenty of work, but was performing very well as goalie. Pirates made a sudden breakaway, with Henry and Hamilton prominent. Neighbour was tested, and tested again, but the backs soon cleared and the Albion forwards were once more given possession. The game continued to be mostly in favour of Albion and Renton was kept busily engaged. Almost at the end of the match Pirates got away while most of the Albion players were at the other end; Howie and Ashton were hard pressed but managed to stave off the attackers till reinforcements arrived. Before they left this territory, however, Pirates, through McKechnie, scored their rinly goal. Shortly afterwards the final whistle sounded with the score: Albion 5 Pirates 1 Dr. D. E. Brown was the referee. CALEDONIANS BEAT MOTUROA. EXTRA TIME PLAYED AT FITZROY. Extra time had to be played at Fitzroy in the Caledonians-Moturoa mated after the score was two-all and Caledonians added two more goals in the extra spell. It was an uninteresting match, however, lack of finish continually nullifying the efforts of both teams. In the latter stages of the game considerable feeling was shown by members of both teams, and several Moturoa players suggested giving the game to Caledonians instead of playing the extra time. The teams were: — Caledonian: J, Rae, Crowe, Cranford, J. Fawcett, Quay, J, McKay, Jackson, Bremner, Gardiner, R. Rae, J. Hill. Moturoa: Royston, Johns, Christiansen, Roper, Anderson, Roper, White; Smith, Thompson, Robban, Simpson. Moturoa kicked off against the sun, but. Caledonians assumed the offensive irnmedatelyiand play remained in Motu-

roa territory for some time. Moturoa cleared and Anderson made a good opening for Smith, but his shot went wide. Caledonians came back from the kick in. Hill beat Anderson and centred to Gardiner, who headed the ball, which rose just over the bar. Roper was penalised for handling the ball, but Hill missed the free kick. Simpson was caught offside and Caledonians came baek again. Moturoa’s custodian saved two hot shots from Jackson and Gardiner, but Gardiner made full use of an opportunity presented during a melee in front of the goal. Early in the second half Caledonians attacked, but Moturoa, utilising the sun, returned. The Caledonian goalie was penalised for holding the ball, but the free kick was fruitless. White made a wonderful opening and sent the ball across to Simpson. The goalie was safe, but Robban took a high kick and the ball rolled over the goalie’s fingers tn equalise the scores. Over-anxiousness" spoiled promising movements on both sides until Caledonians cleared and Hill pushed the custodian through the goal. Moturoa attacked hotly, but the ball was cleared. Simpson then followed up a long kick which beat the goalie, but it rolled on the outside of the posts. Moturoa, not to be denied, came back iu full force. Anderson secured and shot a fine goal. Two extra spells of ten minutes were played. In the first spell Gardiner scored, and in the second spell McKay added another goal. Mr. G. E. Jones was referee.
