A MINISTER’S ASPIRATION

GREATER DIFFICULTIES STILL,

HON. S. G. SMITH’S PREDICTION.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, Aug. 22. Greater difficulties still to be faced, coupled with the hope that despite these it would bo possible to provide every . unemployed man -with at least work and food were foreshadowed in a statement made by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, in reply to a depu- x tation of unemployed at Hamilton today. . The Minister stated that the restrie-xjf-tions placed on single men, on those with money saved, on widowers and others were not imposed, for the purpose of creating friction; they were brought about by the’ plain fact that the Government had not the money. The turn political events took on Friday, added the Minister, was an indication to the people of New Zealand that the financial position had to be faced. Nobody liked wages restriction or an army of unemployed, but facts had to be faced. “Without desiring to be pessimistic,” concluded Mr. Smith, “it is possible that we are going to face worse times during the next few months than ever before.”
