MAKING A TOY WELL.

You can make this toy from etripwood and some odd pieces of fretwood. Cut the uprights- and the ramework for the roof from stripwood half-inch wide and three-eighths-iuch "thick. With your chisel, bevel the top ends of the .cut a slot A in each, one-eighth of an uprights to a right angle, as showpy Sihq inch deep. • — J ~" ''parts B and C, and, bevelling the lower ends at an angle of 45 degrees, glue and nail them together at the top as shown. Cut two pieces D t-o the required length, place one piece in the slot A in each of the uprights, and mark where the parts D slots one eighth of an inc 1 - deep, glue cross the parts B and C. 7 r cutting and nail the various parts togetner. The base of the well, cut from wood a quarter-inch thick, has a rectangular

hole in the middle, as shown at E. Round the edge of this hole a coping F is glued and nailed. Make the coping from strips of fretwood one-ahd-a-quarter inches wide so that, when glued and nailed together, it measures four inches long and three inches wide. For the windlass G, which is four inches long, use a piece of three-quarter inch dowel rod. Make a hole in one end to take a French nail, and a hole in the other end to receive the pointed end oi a piece of bent wire which forms the handle. For this, obtain a piece of stout iron wire two and a half inches long and bend it as shown at H. File the end K to a point so that it will push easily into the hole in the windlass. Another small hole must be made in each upright at a distance of threequarters of an inch below the slot A. Now glue and nail the uprights to the coping F, and fix the windlass in position by the. handle in one end and the nail in the other. The winding rope is a piece of thin string, one e. ' tied to a small wire hook to carr the bucket, which can be purchased at a toyshop. For the roof, take a piece of one-six-teenth-inch plywood or cardboard, LOJ inches long and five and a quaiuer inches wide. Cut it half through' across the middle, bend it to fit on the sloping pieces B and C, and glue it in place.
