SECOND MATE OVERBOARD

WITHDRAWS FROM BIG" RACE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. ' London, Aug. 3. While the King’s yacht Britannia was proceeding to the opening of the races at the Cowes regatta the yacht heeled over and a wave washed overboard the second mate, Mr. Ernest Friend. The King was deeply moved at the tragedy and took an active part in the rescue work in the heavy sea running. Friend, though a strong swimmer, was unable to keep afloat. The Britannia •searched the spot for half an hour without result. i Meanwhile there wits tremendous excitement among the spectators ashore and the yachts at Cowes. The rumour that the King had met with a mishap was soon,dispelled. The King returned to reassure the Quepn. It was announced from the Royal yacht that owing to the loss of Mr. Friend the King would not start the Britannia in ifie King’s Cup race tomorrow.
