AUSTRALIAN FLORINS

EXPERIENCE OF THE BANKS. A substantial increase in the number of Australian florins in circulation in Auckland has been noted by banks and counting-houses during the past month. In fact, says the New Zealand Herald, in the counting-houses of one large business it is estimated that Australian florins outnumber others by two to one.

Recent cases in the Court show that attempts have been made tn evade the regulations prohibiting the import and export of silver. Although the substantial penalties imposed, including the confiscation of the silver, are believed to have had a salutary’ effect, it is evident that substantial amounts of Australian coins have been coming into the Dominion during the past few months, and it is thought the publicity given to the question has induced the public to pass on any Australian coins coming into their possession. There is still a shortage of half-crowns, a coin not minted in Australia. There is a suspicion in banking circles that New Zealand’s supply of half-crowns has been denuded partly as a result of outgoings to Australia.
