TARANAKI HUNT CLUB

FOLLOWERS At MR. P. COLE’S.

TWO LONG RUNS AND A KILL.

Cloudy skies and a keen mountain wind did not deter followers' of the North Taranaki Hunt Club on Saturday and there was a very large attendance when the hounds cast off at- Mr. P. Coje’s. The threatening rain did not fall and the members were able to enjoy two splendid runs, the last culminating in a kill after a brisk chase over five miles of difficult country. While negotiating a rather simple fence where the take off was greasy, Cloetus fell, breaking her neck. The rider. Miss D. Ambury, escaped injury. It was the first acpifient of the kind on the hunting field in North Taranaki for many years. The hounds threw off at Mr. Percy Cole’s, crossed the road in Mr. W, Bailey’s and worked on the right hand across Mr. W. Cole’s to Mr. Draper’s, where a hare was raised. The quarry led the voicing hounds g-t a merry pace through Mr. J. Purdie’s into Mr. A. McKay’s. There was’ a short check but the hare was viewed doubling back to Mr, Purdie’s and the case began once more across Messrs. Draper’s and W. Cole’s properties into JMr. W. Bailey’s. The broken nature of the country enabled the quarry to escape, and after a fruitless search for the scent the pack was whipped off. The main road was crossed, the pack working down towards the sea to Mr. J. Robinson’s. The beach was worked past Messrs. J. Cole’s, Taylor’s, Preston’s and Edwin’s properties before the pack turned toward Mr. Greenwood’s, where the second hare was raised. The hare ran smartly to the boundary and theq doubled back through Mr. Qreen>vopd’s into Mr. Edwin’s, grossing the main road on the left hand into' Messrs. Qiddy’s and Bassett’s, circling through Messrs. J. Cole’s, Jonas’ and Hill’s properties and continuing on the right hand as far as Mr. Foreinap’s, where it Wap baffled by a creek and was forced to double back cross Nikorima Road, through Messrs. Jonas’ and Hill’s properties into Mr. Purdie’s, where the hounds killed.

Hounds, riders and horses alike were run to a standstill by this time and the followers adjourned to the Waihi hall, where Mr. and Mrs. P. Cole and their helpers provided afternoon tea.
