Although the calendar year 1930 was an unprofitable one for most American owners, it has not discouraged one new company at least from entering the harassed business of the North Atlantic trade. The Shipping Board have formally authorised the re-naming of five vessels recently bought from them by the newly-formed Baltimore Mail Steamship Company. These ships ‘are now being reconstructed by the Federal Shjpbuild-. in" and Dry Dock Company, Kearney, (N.J.), at a cost of nearly 2,800,000 dollars, and, commencing in July, they will be engaged in a passenger and mail service from Baltimore to Havre and Hamburg. Formerly known as the Steadfast, Independence, Victorious, Eclipse and Archer, their new names have been derived from ports to which their schedule will take them, viz., City of Baltimore, City of Norfolk, City of Havre, City of Hamburg, and City of Newport News. Their position. in the trans-Atlantic trade will be assisted by substantial mail payments. Another interesting event is that one of the largest U.S. concerns engaged in the Japan trade has decided to join the Japan-At-lantic Coast Conference. This is the Dollar Line, whose large and efficient fleet will now work in harmony with other companies operating on the same route, including the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Osaka Shosen Kaisha, and Barber, Williclmsen Line. The agreement provides for the maintenance of uniform freight rates, as agreed upon by a twothirds majority of members, and a. number of minor agreements covers the cooperative handling of freight.
