MORE SERIOUS OFFENCES.

London, July 17.

Serious crime is greater to-day than at any time during the last 60 years, said Mr. Justice McCardie when charging the grand jury at the Birmingham Assizes. The worst offenders, he said, were either unknown or could not be arrested. Criminals to-day were more ingenious and more astute than those of a geneiation ago; but he thought that the unduly short sentences imposed by the Courts were also responsible.
