ACCIDENT COMPENSATION
AMENDMENT TO LAW PROPOSED.
(By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night.
With a view to remedying the anomaly in accident compensation law and bringing the New Zealand statute into line with, that in operation in England, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart has introduced in the House a Bill to amend the Deaths by Accidents Compensation Act. At present where a person is killed by the negligence of another person and the wife or other relatives sue for damages there is to be deducted from such damages any life insurance moneys or other monetary benefits, such as a pension, that the deceased is entitled to. This has the effect that the wrongdoer benefits by means of the thrift of the deceased person. This anomaly was remedied some years ago in England, and the., object of the Bill is to rectify the New Zealand law in the same way.
