SIR ERNEST HOTSON’S ESCAPE.
MOTIVES OF THE ASSAILANT.

Rec. 10.30 p.m. Calcutta, July 23. The student who attempted to assassinate Sir Ernest Hotson, acting-Gover-nor of Bombay, is Vasuedo Balwant Gogate, aged 19. He was taking a science course at Fergusson College. He told the police that he attempted to kill Sir Ernest as a protest against his acting appointment to the provincial governorship. • Later Gogate said he was protesting against the imposition of martial law last year at Sholapur, where he was educated. When Sir Ernest Hotson was inspecting the students yesterday Gogate suddenly drew a revolver and fired, the bullet striking a metal button on Sir Ernest’s coat, which deflected the missile from the intended victim’s heart. Sir Ernest personally overpowered his assailant.
