SALARY REDUCED BY £llOO.
SIR ISAAC ISAACS’ OFFER.
Sydney, July 15.
The Governor-General, Sir. Isaac Isaacs,, has offered to share in the general reduction of salaries. His Excellency has infornied the Prime Minister, Mr. Scullin, that he will reduce his salary and allowances by a further £llOO a year. Mr. Scullin received the following letter from His Excellency:— “My dear Prime Minister.—l deeply appreciate what I have learned from the Press as to the recognition by the Government of the pecuniary obligations attaching to my position as Gov-ernor-General, and of the effect of discontinuing the previous allowance, of £2OOO to meet Canberra conditions. HaviUo- regard, however, to the present juncture in Australian affairs, I wish to say that, in addition to the discontinuance of the allowance referred to, and the relinquishment during my Gov-crnor-Generalship of my judicial pension of £1750, which I anticipate will be reduced to the value of £l4OO per annum, I desire, on this basis, during the operation oi the present proposed •reneral reductions, to endeavour to economise as far as possible and, with that view, further to reduce the sum to be received ly me from the Commonwealth by £llOO a year. This latter sum and' the above-mentioned sum of £l4OO will of themselves make a total of £2500 a year, equivalent, to a 25 per cent, reduction of £lO,OOO. —Isaac A. Isaacs.” Air. Scullin stated that the Government had not discontinued the £2OOO special Canberra allowance, and if the Governor-General had decided not to relinquish his pension, he would be entitled to draw £13,400 instead of £B9OO, which Ir will receive' this financial year,
