STOOD DOWN FOR SEASON
A RUGBY OFFENDER.

Ashburton, July 20.
What a referee described as the dirtiest incident he had ever seen on the football field ended to-night in J. Cairns, a Mayfield senior Rugby player being stood down for the remainder of. the season by the Ashburton Rugby Union, Mr. G. W. Brown, referee in the senior match,.Mayfield v. Allenton, last Saturday reported that he had occasion to order Cairns off the field for deliberate foul play. The referee and the offending player attended tho meeting. Mr. Brown said that Cairns landed on top of one the Allenton players and tho attention of Mr. Brown was drawn by bad language. Carins had his hands on his opponent’s throat and was bashing his head on the ground. It was the dirtiest incident he had ever seen on the football field. There was no incentive.
Cairns stated that he was fending off liis opponent and fell on top of him with bis hand on his chin. He admitted using the language complained of by the referee but denied that he had acted in the manner stated. It was decided to stand Cairns down for the rest of the season.
