WAITARA NEWS

PRIMARY school affairs. The Waitara School Committee met on Monday evening, Mr. W. B. Glasgow presiding. The headmaster reported that the roll was 381 and the average attendance 34(1. Owing to the bad weather the attendance had been affected considerably. Miss Browne had commenced duties as infant mistress. He had received 87 per cent, subscriptions of 2e fid (£lO 17s fid) for the dental clinic. This numbered about the complete list. The school basketball team won the Deare Shield at the New 'Plymouth tourney and at present held the four chief trophies in the district. This achievement was unique in the history of the school, and reflected great credit on Miss Harper, who has been the coach. The committee decided to write to the captain of the team offering con-

gratulations. The chairman stated that the extra miniature cup had come to hand from the Herbert Smith Trust, which was to be presented to Leslie Cole, who tied with H. Purdie for the sports championship. Referring to dental clinic matters the chairman read correspondence on the matter. He reminded the committee of the fact that it had to pay £9 18 s per year more than previously and that the parents had been asked to contri- j bute towards the extra cost. The department had been asked for a visit of the nurses as early as possible. It would be remembered that when the extra demand had been made the committee cancelled the visitation of the nurse pending more information being received. Later the parents were circularised for assistance and had responded well with 2<s fid subscriptions. Although they were empowered to charge up to 5s annually for each child, it was thought that for this year only 2s fid should be charged. The committee agreed that only As fid per family be charged this year, apd

if any parent was not in a position to pay the name was to be placed on the list. In pointing out that the service should be self-supporting the chairman mentioned that 960 operations were performed last year, so even' if the 'committee decided to increase the subscription to 5s next year it could be seen how great an amount could be <?aved by the parents. Miss Anderson, whilst riding her cycle along Queen Street, collided with a dog, i resulting in a. fall, dislocating.her shoul- I der and straining the ligaments.
