THE GOST OF THE LOAF.
(To the Editor).
Sir, —Tuesday’s issue of the Daily New<s contained a report of the discussion at the Mid-Cariterbury Farmers’ Union meeting regarding the price of' the 41b loaf, as a result of Ashburton’s objection to paying one shilling for what Christchurch paid niuepenee for. The remedy appeared to lie in the suggestion that Christchurch bakers operate a branch in Ashburton and sell the 41b loaf there for ninepeuee, which is, of course, entirely a South affair. It is, however, a little worse up north hero, ' for despite wage cuts and lean times, the 41b loaf in Patea is Is 2d. So if any Ashburton bakers are looking for new shilling a loaf customers as a, result of the'invasion of the ninepencq a loaf retailers they know where they are sure of a welcome, a welcome that would oply be eclipsed by that extended the Christchurch bakers if they continued to follow Ashburton up. Never was it truer than now that “The hand that rooks the cradle kneads the dough.”—I am, etc., < ■. \ BREADWINNER. Patea, July 22, 1931.
