KORU-KIRIHAU NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Koru hall comittee held another successful euchre and dance evening recently, a pleasing feature being the number of visitors present from other districts. The ladies’ euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Lynch and Miss Dons Jury, while the mens’ trophies were captured by Messrs. J. Loveridge and R. Corbett. Supper was served by the committee, and the floor cleared .or dancing. Mr. 'P. Meredith was at the piano, while Mr. J. Green acted as master of ceremonies.. The members of the Koru school committee (Messrs. J. Proffit, M. Sharpe, H. Looney, J. Blakely and J. Payne, assisted by Mr. R. Sharpe) have been engaged for more than a week upon the task of clearing the school ground. 'Some time ago the pines bordering the school property were felled, and the work of removing the litter of trunks and branches is now completed. Although hampered by wretched weather conditions, the committeemen have effected a wonderful improvement to the appearance of the grounds. Grea trunks and butts, many of them three feet in diameter, have been heaped together, and, much to the surprise of many who thought that such monsters could never be destroyed by fire, have been reduced to small heaps of ash. The fires, which burned brightly for the whole week, could be seen from the main road, and caused much interest and not a little concern among night travellers who knew the district. Members of the Kirihau school committee have also been engaged in improving the school globe. The playing area has been ploughed and drained. Unfortunately, the heavy rainfall of the past few weeks has reduced the ploughed area to a sea of mud, and a change in the weather conditions woulo be much appreciated by the school children, as well as by their helpers, Messrs L. Payne, F. Oribb and E. Giddy. The ladies of the district met recently and decided to hold an old-time dance in the near future. A strong committee has been set up, and given a fine evening, the function should prove a decided success. Mr. Percy Marsh was recently the guest of Mrs. Longstaff, Inglewood. Messrs. Cecil and Roy Foster have returned from a brief visit to Hawera. Mr. Roy Allen has left, the district to occupy his farm on Carrington Road. As a result of a tractor accident, Mr. W. Ingle is still indisposed. Mr. Chas. Ingle has taken charge of the tractor during his brother’s illness. < Miss R. Green is visiting her sister, Mrs. Lilley, Frankley Road.
