ROOT-GROWING CONTESTS
/ LOWGARTH DISTRICT RESULTS Lowgarth settlers are enthusiastic of root crops, as was evident when Mr. J. W. Palmer visited the district on Monday to judge the crops entered in the annual comp.titions. He was accompanied by Mr. Sulzberger (president of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union), and a number of residents. Both in number and in variety the crops exceeded those of any other district. The following are the results, the maximum for cultivation and quality in that order being 10 and IO;— MANGOLDS. A. T. Burke, 71 tons 4cwt, 8, B—total 158. A. D. There were also a, few more entered, but for various reasons withdrawn from the competition. The leaders in soft turnips, judged some time ago, were: A. D. Johnson 1191 and A. T. Burke 1064. These, with Chou Moellier, made a competition for a special cup given/by the local branch of the union and the result was a win for Mr. A. D. Johnson, the totals being: A. D. Johnson, 3204; A. T. Burke, 3134. There was also another cup for aggregate of carrots and mangolds, and this fell to A. T. Burke by the narrow margin of a half-point. The totals were: A. T. Burke, 2654 points; A. D. Johnson, 265; A. T. Sulzberger, 249}. GENERAL ITEMS. The following have been chosen to represent Eltham thirds against Midhirst, at Midhirst, to-morrow: Calcott, Jenkins, Vincent, Sheehy, Noble, Leatharn, Maslin, Horrocks (2), McDonald, Austin, Bootten, Bourke, ’ Cross, Tipler. .At the Eltham Brass Band euchre tournament on Monday the prizewinners were Mrs. Rae (9}) 1, Miss Parker (9) 2; Mr. Wilson (10) 1, .Mr. R. Scown '(94) 2; consolation prizes, Mrs. Corbett (2), Mr. E. L. Egarr, (14). Employers in Stratford, who have been approached to signify their willingness to the conducting of a weekly collection from staffs in aid of people in need of assistance, have accorded the appeal an- excellent reception. The town clerk, Mr, P. Skoglund, stat is that he has as yet no accurate idea of the amount that will be subscribed, but hopes that when the collection i-s made on Monday the response will be a hearty one. Issues and renewals of driving licenses by the Stratford Borough Council total 571 to date, as compared with the total of 730 for last year. Thirty-live heavy traffic licenses have been issued, compared with a total of 76 last year. An earthquake shock : which lasted for seven minutes was recorded in Stratford at 3.3 a.m., yesterday.
