STRATFORD BOWLING CLUB

SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION The Stratford Bowling Club is in an enviable position financially and last year another substantial improvement was effected. The report, which is to 'be presented to the annual meeting tomorrow records the fact that, although an apparent small monetary loss was made on the actual working of the year, it was compensated lor by fairly extensive permanent improvements, the club having renewed the structure of the pavilion above the supper room ceiling, painted the building, affixed new windows and generally brought the asset into a thoroughly good state. A good deal of attention was given the green and surroundings, trenches having been dug along the southern side to prevent root-growth from affecting the surface, the flower-beds leetored and the whole green top-dressed twice during the season. Early in the year the club’s vacant section was disposed of at a satisfactory price and the bank overdraft was substaiitially reduced in consequence. Depreciation has been ( written oil' both land and buildings for many years, but even at the present-day figure assets exceed liabilities by £313. In view of the nonrecurring improvements effected during the year, no depreciation was written oft' this season, and in any case the committee considered .that the property and assets were set down at an amount well below their actual value. The sum of i£3 13s fid was spent on seed and fertiliser up to the date of closing the accounts. The greenwarden (Mr. L. B. Davis, states the report, is to be congratulated upon its condition. The green was officially opened on October 23, 1930, and although the season could not be regarded as a particularly favourable one for bowling, many enjoyable games were played. This was particularly so at the end of the shield competition when progressive pairs tournaments proved exceedingly popular and drew large entries. Club competitions were won as follow: —Senior championship, W. Harris; B championship, K. S. Ewing; colts championship, W- E. Williams; handicap pairs, C. W. Higgs (lead) and W. G. Liddell (skip); Labour Day pairs K. S. Ewing (lead) and L. B. Davis (skip); Easter pairs, W. E. Williams (lead) and K. S. Ewing (skip). The Sayers medal promoted a good deal of interest in singles play. Of 27 games 20 were won by the Stratford Club and seven by Avon. Friendly matches were played with several distant clubs. A feature of the year was the change in club colours and the adoption of new blazers and uniform shoes. The club was represented at the Dominion tournament at Auckland by a rink skipped by the president. The rink won its section comfortably but was eliminated in ,the post-sectional' play. The Dominion pairs and singles were also contested and the only loss suffered by N. Bell, Hamilton, the ultimate singles champion of New Zealand, was'at his meeting with Harris (Stratford). Two rinks attended the Taranaki open tournament and one the Taranaki .New Year tourney. The report congratulated the Avon rink skipped by A. Dickinson upon winning the opeir tournament, the Waitara Club upon winning the centre’s shield, and.F. Weston (Avon) upon attaining the honour of champion of champions. STRATFORD WINTER SHOW. KING’S THEATRE. “HOLD EVERYTHING” COMEDY. “Hold Everything” has everything. This Warner Bros, and Vi taphone production, which opened an engagement at the King’s Theatre yesterday, is orie of the funniest comedies ever screened. With Winnie Lightner and Joe E.
