That the speed of cargo ships is increasing is illustrated in an analytical statement prepared by the National Council of American Shipbuilders. The purpose with which this inquiry was undertaken was, of course, to show that American shipowners are lagging behind the general movement. But the figures have a wider interest in aa far as Britain is concerned. It is claimed in the first place that the total number of cargo vessels of 2000 gross tons or over built throughout the world in 1929 and 1930 was 460, with an aggregate gross register of 2,203,879 tons. Of these 250, with a gross register of 1,231,471 tons, were built for Great Britain. In the 13 to 15-knot class Great Britain had 22 built in 1929 and 18 in 1930. Norway had seven built in 1929 and 14 in 1930. Germany had seven built in 1929 and two in 1930. . Spain had five built in 1929 and six in 1930. The Netherlands had seven built in 1930 and none in the previous year. Denmark had one built in 1929 and three in 1930. France had three built in 1930, while Italy,’ Sweden, and Spain had two each built in 1930. In the 10 to 12-knot class Great Britain led with 110 built in 1929 and 93 in 1930, while Norway was second with 21 built in 1929 and 15 in 1930. These figures are of interest in that they give support to the belief that the speed of the ordinary cargo ships is still advancing owing to the progress of marine engineering. It is a source of satisfaction that in this movement Great Britain should be taking th© lead. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
