MAINTENANCE OF PARKS. MEETING OF THE DOMAIN BOARD. Matters pertaining to the maintenance and th? conservation of reserves in Stratford were dealt with by the Stratford Domain Board last night, the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, presiding. "’he trustees of the Methodist Church asked that the tall trees growing in the park near the Methodist Sunday School je either cut down or “topped” as they were causing trouble. The trees will be topped and topping will also be done in other places round the park where necessary. The following alternatives in connection with the arrangement for the division of revenue from the football ground and the grandstand will be submitted to the Taranaki Rugby Union in accordance with the decision leached last year that the position should be reviewed: (1) Domain Board to receive 15 per. cent, of the gross gate receipts from the ground and all the grandstand receipts at ordinary competition matches and 50 per cent, of receipts at representative trial and play-off matches. (2) Board to receive 12$ per cent, of gross gate receipts from, the ground and all grandstand receipts. Last year, said the Mayor, the board’s portion amounted to £35, the arrangement having been that the board . receive 15 per cent, of gross gate receipts and from the grandstand the whole pro- - ceeds from ordinary matches and 25 per cent, from representative trial and final games. r ■, A deputation from the Stratford F rtball Club consisting of Messrs. F. Bowler and C. Massey asked that a new ticket-box be placed at the gates of : Victoria Park. Mr. Bowler said he knew the board was adverse to having any structure at the gates that would de-. , tract from the general appearance of the entrance to the park, but the football club considered that the present box offended in that way more than the neat structure in a permanent position would do. The old box could then be used at the gate in Orlando Street opposite the gymnasium. The existing box was too small, too clumsy and a lot heavier than was necessary. A new one could be located a few feet north of the gates and could be either permanent or moveable. - The engineer (Mr. L. B. Davis) said a suitable box could be built for about £lO or £l5 and the board decided to grant the . request. Provision will be made for two men. .t .. Mr.. H. C. North was made an ad' member of the board. s GENERAL ITEMS. The horse which was killed when It charged'into Mr. Austin Yarndley’s car ' near Ngaere railway crossing on Sunday evening was a thoroughbred named Gassfield, owned by Mr. R. C. Payne, Hawera. Gassfield and another thoroughbred were grazing in a paddock near the old Masonic Hall, Juliet Street, Stratford, and apparently covered the two miles to the scene of the accident at full gallop. How the garden rake came to bo entangled in the horse 6 tail J is still a mystery. ' : The Stratford Borough Council last night adopted a recommendation from the electric light committee stating that in small residences where one meter controlled both light and heat points the units used over the assessed number (at per room) be charged at 3d gross. ... ■ The fortnightly euchre and dance fl party was held in the Te Wera hall on June 12. in spite of the heavy rain there was a good attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs. Morris I, Mrs. McGrath 2; Master K. Coley 1, Mr. H. Garlick 2. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. E. Jarvis and Miss E. Marshall. That pinus insignis firewood at present stacked in King Edward Park be { given free to necessitous cases, distribution to be left to the Women’s Relief Committee, and that £5 be spent on makinw the cottage in Miranda Street habitable for unemployed single men were decisions made last night by the Stratford Borough Council.

Five young men assembled haphazard on a private golf links near Stratford during the" week-end, and when they teed up to commence a game it wixs found that four of them were lefthanded. In remarking upon this coincidence one of the party suggested to a Daily News reporter that the circumstance was probably unique in golf history, at any rate, in Taranaki. • “The Railway Department does not consider the Seyton Street level crossing a particularly dangerous one aha cannot see its way clear to incur the expense of providing automatic warning devices,” wrote the department to the Stratford Borough Council last night. The rather small matter when it was all boiled down of providing a gate on the Regan Street side of Victoria Park entailed at the meeting of the Stratford Domain Board last night a lengthy discussion which revolved round the useless nature from the viewpoint of the public of the double gate that existed at present. Mr. A. H. Trotter said the gate was kept locked and was intended, purely for the use of borough vehicles and the fire engine. He remarked that ladies desiring to gain entrance to that part of the park had had to climb the gate, and on occasion he had had to turn his head in modesty while the evolution was being carried out. It was left to Mr. Trotter to try to interest residents in the vicinity in the provision of a suitable gate.

Accentuated by the recent heavy | rains, the filling of one of the trenches I connecting a private house with the , sewerage 'system in Rosalind Street has k subsided to such an extent that a deep j hole has been left in the road. Yester- . day at noon a car passed oyer this "bump find broke two leaves of its front | spring. '■ j During the month only two diphtheria . cases ha°d been reported (from the same i house), and there were only two. positive carriers on the records, reported the inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers, to the Borough Council last night. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. Mrs. J. B. Cresswell is visiting Wallington. Miss C. Milne, Toko, is visiting friends in Stratford.
